Mel Kiper says Stanford guard DeCastro is a natural for Cowboys at 14, but other OL options available

Draft expert Mel Kiper said he had a tough time assigning a defensive back to the Cowboys with their 14th pick in the first round. Instead, he called Stanford guard David DeCastro the best value for the Cowboys and likely an immediate starter.

“It’s somewhere they need to upgrade. He makes an immediate impact there,” Kiper said in a conference call with reporters Thursday. “He’s NFL-ready. He’ll immediately project as a starter and maybe a Pro Bowl down the road.”

Kiper said he has the 6-foot-5, 310-pound guard rated as the 12th-best player on his board. He might be gone by the time the Cowboys pick, he said...

Cordy Glenn would be a consolation prize...not as good or as ready as DeCastro, but if we needed to go pass rush in round 1, we could likely get Glenn in round 2.

My ideal favorite situation would be to get Ben Grubbs and Carl Nicks in free agency, therefore allowing us some more flexibility in the first round to go get a DB, DE, or OLB, or turn #14 into a bounty of picks.

No way we go after both Grubbs and Nicks. Interesting that Callahan and Nicks have a past together, we will see if Jerry pursues Nicks.

One guard position will be either Nagy or Arkin, the other either a draft pick of FA.

I still think Center will be the top priority in FA.

.....fair enough guys, and we all keep hearing Nicks' name BUT.....if he's THAT good won't the saints just put the franchise tag on him? Or do they have another skilled position player like Colston they need to put it on?

I'd say it's highly unlikely Glenn would be there for our 2nd round pick.

Both Grubbs and Nicks? I don't know that any team would go there but I like the way you think.

The Saints have several top players they need to sign this year, including their QB Drew Brees.

This won't be a Mickey Spagnola if he's so good, why is he available thing. He'll only be available because the Saints can't afford to keep him.

.....I didn't mean to imply Nicks isn't that good: I've heard raves and when I've watched the Saints play I NEVER hear his name called: EVER, and we all know what that means!

But yeah, that's potentially a winner as they have all those other guys to sign......but you know Brees will sign a cap friendly deal so he can hopefully get one of his main bodyguards signed: in theory anyway.......man we NEED this cat don't we?

I might be thinking about another guy, then...could've sworn there was an OG from Georgia that projected round 2. Maybe it's their center I'm thinking of.

I know they won't, but it's ideal to me -- two proven guys at a position of need on both sides, plus freeing us from needing to draft DeCastro.

....ooops....that should be "JONES" obviously......he's a stud. Dont' know where he projects though: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=georgia%20bulldogs%20center&source=web&cd=4&sqi=2&ved=0CD0QFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.georgiadogs.com%2Fsports%2Fm-footbl%2Fmtt%2Fjones_ben00.html&ei=t4AZT8q2D6702wX6v4DwCw&usg=AFQjCNHXj6qeWnh7vjiOSt_BU6OQKIW-qQ

I would love to have Decastro if we do miss on him there are some really good Guards in this draft and of course FA is an option. I guess my main concern is heading into camp did this team improve the interior line?

I like Glenn, but I get the feeling he may not be athletic enough for the 1st pick. You see him fall down alot and trip over his own feet.

........beat that drum Doomsday.........interior line......interior line......INTERIOR LINE........on BOTH sides of the ball. Maybe if we scream loud enough Jerrah will stop drafting problematic WR's and actually sign Nicks and draft DeCastro: still other holes, but it would be a helluva start. I can dream anyway.

I actually think Defensive End is more of a need than interior line on the defensive side of the football, unless you're saying that Ratliff is now one of your starting Ends and you want a NT to replace him.

I have said from the get go after the season was done I want to see 3 main upgrades takes place. OG, OLB and CB. Not to say there will not be other picks or FA at other spots but heading into camp I would hope we have addressed what I feel are 3 main needs

What's everyone's thoughts on C Chris Myers in free agency, DeCastro in the draft then one of our existing players playing the other guard spot?

Sounds great to me.

Kind of hard to criticize the guy's athletic ability as an NFL G considering he played T too in college.

Some have him in the 2nd round, others...like Mel...have him in the mid first right now.

I just don't think he'll last to 45.
