27) - Kevin Johnson - Dallas Cowboys (12-4)

COLLEGE: Wake Forest

Class: Sr

HT: 6-0

WT: 188

POS: CB

Analysis: Dallas could go a few ways here, because the Cowboys have a need along the defensive line, and safety is also a question mark, but I'm not sure they need anything more than a cornerback who can play right away, and Johnson fits the profile. A standout on a lousy team, Johnson has good length for the position and moves and mirrors as well as any cornerback in the draft. He can make man-to-man coverage look so easy at times, and he's an active run defender. It's hard to play while ahead in the NFL if you can't cover, and Dallas would do well with this pick.

T j clemmings went next to the Colts but that guy is super raw.

Games are won in the trenches, Mel. The sooner you get it through that glorious head of hair and thick skull the better.

while i agree with this but what would you do if the draft went this way? i would just trade out of the first because i really dont want to draft a CB in the first again.

I don't get Arik Armstead as a mid first round pick.

DJ Humphries is really climbing up the boards.

Didn't Mel have us taking Davis in his previous mock? If so, wonder why he changed his mind?

I draft talent and take Todd Gurley.

It would take a really nice offer for me to trade out of that pick with Gurley still on the board. He's an elite impact player.

I don't think anyone around here understands it.

Not only does he have him as a mid 1st round pick, he also called him the player with the most upside in the entire draft. I just don't see it. I guess he's falling in love with measurables. Lynden Trail has measurables too.

It's not just Kiper though. Armstead is highly touted by a lot of these draftniks. Maybe they're all right and I'm wrong but I see a coach killer type who never produces as his skill set says he should.

I like Kevin Johnson, but in this situation it would be hard for me to pass on Gurley (especially if Murray is gone).

You do not see, Philly going in that direction?

Are you commenting in general or in response to a CB at #27?

This is an honest question because I know you're a BPA guy.

I have serious doubts about Gurley playing this year,i guess we will know more about it in his pro day but i dont think we can afford to red shirt our 1st rd pick.

Philly could go a lot of directions. It seems kind of counterproductive to trade an All Pro, though, if you just plan to draft his replacement in the first round. I guess Chipper could just be doing the NBA thing and dumping salary so he can load up on FA's, but A) that has never worked in the NFL, and B) McCoy will be a lot harder to replace than Jackson was last year, and I think it was easy to see how that turned out.

In general about Mel's persistence on giving the Cowboys a cornerback. He does it every year with at least one of his mocks.

Ah.

Well, in this case, if Gurley, Gordon, the top five pass rushers and the top six OL are gone, what's a better pick?

(Another honest question.)

As long as Carr is still on the team I don't see how all of these guys think CB is such a huge need. Don't get me wrong, we aren't by any means set at CB, but it's hardly our biggest need.

Anyway...I like Johnson's cover skills, but his weight kinda scares me. I'd hate to see him try to take 1 of these 6'5 220 lb monster WR's 1 on 1.

You just changed the scenario on me. They all weren't gone.

If you want a DL I would take over Johnson in the scenario Mel has mocked, I'll take Dupree. I'd also take both OL that went right after Johnson in this mock.

Who would you take instead? (See my post above.)

In my case, I'm not in love with the guy or wedded to any position at that slot. He just looks like probable BPA to me.
