My mom was 9 yrs old when she saw one of her big brothers roll down the drive of their farm as he headed off to war. She never saw him again. Killed in France right near the end of the war. Thats an uncle I never got to meet. In the family we have an American flag with 48 stars and some old pictures. His name is on the WWII Memorial in Detroit, but for everybody but our family, his is just another name etched in the stone.
Thousands of guys are just a name on a marker somewhere, but to their families they meant the world to them, and they are just a memory.
On Monday we will honor all of them, but its just a small token hardly enough to truly honor them. My mom will fly her flag as she does ever year to honor her brother. And like every year I can remember, she will get tears in her eyes. 71 yrs ago and she still remembers the last time she saw him like it was yesterday.
Hope all you Zoners have a great Memorial Day, and please, take the time to reflect and honor those who gave their lives so we could have what we have. Ill be honoring my Uncle Tony and thinking about the price he paid . . . . . . . . . .
