As we remove the lights from the tree and finish the leftover turkey and dressing I'd like to come out of the draft with several things.
A corner with the ability to start. That's asking a lot in this league but Dallas did nothing about CB during free-agency. Not only do they need a corner, they need one who can come in and at least contribute serious minutes. I think there's 4-5 guys in this class that could possibly do that.
A long term answer or at least a long term attempt at free safety. Kazee may well be that guy and I like the player but he's coming off an injury and is only under contract for 1 year. I'd like to see another DB added to compete, push, backup, and learn from Kazee who's familiar with Quinn's defense. A guy like J. Holland who's versatile and also adds special teams value is the type of player I'd like.
A pass rusher and I don't care what flavor. Can never have too many and it's a position that takes time as we've seen from DLaw and Gregory. Guys who can work inside out like M. Williams and P. Turner. Guys who can play tough outside like C. Basham or R. Perkins. Guys who are standup rushers like Ossai or Tryon. I don't really care which, I just hope Dallas continues to develop pass rushers.
An offensive tackle in training. I'm more sold on T. Smith and L. Collins health than most on this board and chuckle at the idea of a Sewell or Slater even having a remote chance at beating either current tackle out of their starting position. With that said it's a deep tackle draft, I'm not leaving without one, and I've got time to bring him along. S. Brown, J. Ball, J. Hudson, and especially D. Smith are guys I could see being value picks on day 3 that just need some more time.
Linebacker. Dallas doesn't have enough and the players they do have are unreliable to this point. It's an important position that always needs good depth, use in sub packages, and special teams. I hope Dallas comes out of the draft with another LB, and one who has 3 down potential like a J. Davis, D. Moses, or P. Werner. If a LB has to be run off the field in certain passing or running downs I don't want him. Must be scheme versatile at the LB position.
I know a big space eating DT should be on this list, but I've never seen a DT crop like this one. It's awful. Zero first round grades from me, only 3 second round grades, and maybe 3-4 guys I'd spend a 3rd on. I know it's their biggest need but I refuse to reach for one. I'm seeing people mention guys like T. Shelvin in the 3rd who's a fat arse, didn't play in 2021, and didn't have much production prior to that. In my opinion reaching for guys like this purely out of need is a bad way to draft. It's a strong draft for DB's, LB's and tackles so I'm going to play to the strength of the draft.
