Mesquite cop pepper sprays squirrel

MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) – Police in Mesquite are reviewing a case involving an officer who pepper sprayed a baby squirrel outside of Kimbrough Middle School. The incident happened Wednesday while several students watched in horror, and caught the situation on camera.

Video of the incident – posted here on YouTube – shows a man identified as Officer Davis standing over the squirrel and using pepper spray to subdue the baby animal. According to Sgt. Wes Talley of the Mesquite Police Department, the squirrel had been behaving erratically in the moments before what is shown in the video.

I am shocked that a squirrel behaved erratically. They seem so calm and subdued.

The officer believed the baby squirrel was rabid. It was cleaned up by animal control officers and later released into the wild.

I think you need a little more information than this video to make a determination. It appeared as though the squirrel was repeatedly coming toward the officer, which is pretty bizarre for a squirrel and leads me to believe there might have been adequate reason to think the squirrel was rabid. Pepper spray is better than shooting it.

I read an article on cracked recently that showed how squirrels are actually pretty damn evil, and by evil I mean there have been increasing instances of them attacking children in parks and mauling their faces. Unprovoked mind you, its pretty bazar.

I agree that a little more information is always better when making determinations of what transpired; however, I don't think the squirrels behavior is that bizarre. I have seen plenty of squirrels approach people. Maybe some kids were feeding the squirrel prior to this event.
