Evans cut in wake of arrest

Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said the recent off-field behavior of defensive tackle Fred Evans would be taken seriously. Apparently, he was serious.

The team waived Evans on Thursday in the wake of his second arrest in less than six months, prematurely ending what appeared to be a promising career with the Dolphins.

Cameron offered no public comment or explanation for the release.

It isn't exactly difficult to figure it out: Early Saturday morning, Evans was arrested in South Beach for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest with violence, battery on a police officer and trespassing.

Cameron issued a stern statement after the arrest, noting the team ''will not condone this type of behavior.'' The decision to waive Evans could also send a message to the rest of the roster that Cameron isn't joking about his desire to assemble a team of good character.

The latest charges come four months after he was also arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession in Texas.

Evans pleaded no contest, placing him on probation with the law -- and apparently on a no-tolerance policy with Cameron as well.

The loss comes as a blow to a defensive line that had previously been hoping for big things from Evans, who seemed like an overachieving seventh-round pick. Evans was the projected backup -- and eventual replacement -- for Keith Traylor, who is nearing the end of his career.

Evans was arrested Sunday morning after being subdued with a Taser by police officers when he refused to cooperate. When Evans refused to leave a taxi, officers tried to handcuff him, according to a police report.

That's when Evans became violent, leading to the use of the Taser.
