Dumping on Mazi Smith or any rookie is kind of silly after 1 or 2 preseason games. First Mazi was not that bad against the Jags. He was not great against the Seahawks, but it is still only two games. I said a long time ago do not expect much from rookie DTs because it is rare when they make a major contribution. Derrick Brown was pretty average his first year. Jordan Davis was pretty average last year. Mazi and Jalen Carter will not be spectacular this year. You may see a flash here and there, but as rookies they will have some bad plays and some bad days. If Mazi keeps his head, he will be fine. Given the rookies some time to learn the NFL game. In two year, Mazi will look like a great pick. Patience, Grasshoppers.
Having said that, sometimes you can see a player lacks an important characteristic to give pause. I think Eric Scott has slow makeup speed and this will kill him in the NFL. Maybe he learns to anticipate with experience to make up for it. We'll see. But that's the point. Give them all time to figure it out and reach their potential. Landry said 3 years and I think that is a fairly accurate assessment. Some may get there sooner, some a bit later. But all need an adjustment period.
