Michael Irvin: We don't have a talent problem, we have a heart problem

Verdict is out on the players until we get a real coaching staff.

He's on 105.3 the Fan right now ranting on the players. I'll transcribe a bit.

- He said he's been doing a lot of thinking about this team over the last few days and determined that "we didn't overrate the talent, we overrated the heart of the team."

- He thinks that the players don't seem like they really want it and he's shocked that they're not more bothered/motivated by all the negative things the media says about them.

- When he was asked about the team lacking a Michael Irvin type of leader on gamedays to fire up the sideline he said it's hard for the leaders to lead on Sunday if they're not leading Monday thru Saturday.

- He said that he and some players used to meet all the time at the Cowboys Cafe at Valley Ranch on their off time and plan out how they were going to win championships. He doesn't get the vibe that this group is doing that. Not enough communication btw players outside of football.

Overall he sounded incredibly frustrated with this group of players.
He ain't wrong, but leadership starts with the front office. I would like to see how some of these players respond to a real HC. Some need to go - high salary and all. Can't believe the mindset of one of the Captains.

Well, it's largely his fault for refusing to call out Jason Garrett's inept coaching.
Michael Irvin blames everyone else but Garrett and has helped create this mess by talking to Jerry with his input but refusing to call Jason out.
Garrett’s conservative game plans are a problem but it’s also on the players to do things like:

- Catch easy passes that should be TDs vs the Packers instead of letting it go off your hands.
- Don’t have 6 drops vs the Eagles with season on the line
- Dont assume the play is over and fumble the ball vs the Saints when you’re at midfield.
- Pick up blitzes vs the Jets on a 2 pt conversion.
- Don’t assume just because you worked on a slant play all week, that no defender will be there during the game vs the Giants.
- When you have Dalvin Cook in the open field tackle him to the ground.
- Don’t let Mitch Tribusky look like Steve Young running and passing.

Uktimately it’s on leadership that they haven’t instilled the culture to make sure these things don’t happen. However Irvin’s saying in the early 90s, it didn’t even need to be addressed by Jimmy because the players stopped these problems before they ever started being constant.

We have a lame duck coach without a contract. The media harped on this point, by mid year the players gave up on the lame coach. All Jerry’s doing.
Very, very true. I tried to say the same thing this morning, just didnt come out as well.

This is precisely why this team needs a coach like Meyer. To me he’s the 2020 version of Jimmy Johnson.
Meyer isnt coming here. Jerry isnt giving up control.

If you're Meyer, are you going to allow your legacy to be a failure at the NFL level because you had to follow the lead of a proven loser, or are you going to want to come in and do things your own way?

Urban Meyer is no puppet, and Jerry isnt changing. I believe he has already said so.

This organization can’t handle truth. Top to bottom they’ve got their heads in the sand.

I actually use to worry about retaining players after the season ended. Nowadays, I could care less who leaves. I'd just as soon wipe the slate clean and start over like an expansion team. I'm sick of the entitlement in this organization.

Jones doesn't deserve to own the Star, and none of these so called pro football players deserve to wear it. As a matter of fact, I'd like to see the new coach not even let the players wear the Star at all until they've earned the right to wear it...

millennial players are not your fathers Cowboys. Think Dallas water down due to the cap and then another splash because of the times. Yep, 50/50 ball. what separates the top from the bottom is closing in. Good coaches and management is what wins today, not the players as much as in the past.

Theres a list of problems with this team no just 1:
Coaching
Owner/gm
Front office
Roster management
Talent
Culture
Accountability
Players not caring
Both offensive and defensive schemes

Going to take at least 3 years to fix it so Dallas can be contenders again.

There's a name for players like we have on this team. It's the same name I call lazy people at work. "Paycheck Collectors"...

As much as I want Garrett gone, not even his fault. You either have drive, and a will to be the best or you don't. Michael is right, these players have no heart.
They have no will to win... won't matter what coach we have, they will still suck, because they are all wussy little crybaby _________s.

Players will lash out on Irvin for making such comments about them! There will be no slander in this locker room! You heard it here first folks! D-Law will tell him to look in the mirror and Dak will reassure him that we control our destiny!

Irvin had this guy named Jimmy Johnston. We have Jason Garrett. Bring a hard noise coach back in here and give him control and this team would win.

They'll spend all of their passion twitter-bashing Irvin and then play with no heart the next game.

I agree with Mike. For a few members of the team anyway.

HE (Irvin) would be a great WR coach for the cowboys.

At one point of time, he was approached regarding that but he turned it down. I have no link to verify this last statement, so you can just consider it hearsay for now.

These players are highly trained....to ignore the media.
