This sucks.

You dont just remove michael young from your team. he means a ton to the locker room. We go from a team leader who always holds him self to the highest standards and takes responbility for every bad thing that happens to help the team, to adrian beltre who is a mercenary playing for money and doesnt even speak english that well.

Again this sucks.

Jon Daniels always says he looks up to Bill Belichik and the way they operate, I guess making it known that you are willing to trade anyone speaks to that.

and now young wants out. Nolan ryan just confirmed he sat down with him and there is no going back he wants out and its best for everyone.

I am really dissapointed in this.

I have a feeling its going to be back to the long summers out at the ballpark.

but hey, like the guy across the street we now have a huge HD video screen. So when the team is 10 games out in august the media can talk about that.

Uggh I hate this.

I hate it too, but it seems everyone was backed into a corner. Young really didn't have a position, and it seemed hard to believe he would be happy as a fulltime DH and only filling in ocassionally in the infield. He is such a professional though, and really the face of the team, so it's hard to think about him not being around, and it's hard to believe that the team wont suffer from losing a guy like him.

Trade him for a pitcher and sign Thome? Sounds good to me.

I don't blame Young one bit, they screw with him every off-season, and he does nothing but produce and produce well.

You could argue he is the greatest Ranger ever. I haven't really liked a single move this entire off-season, Beltre is fine but it isn't going to be a contract year so he may suck.

Our starting pitching staff were all chances in the dark that did extremely well last season. I can't see all of them producing the same. I don't see the Rangers making the post-season.

They should have asked Mike what he felt before they signed Beltre. And now the Rangers are screwed because they don't have a bona-fide DH. It would have been perfect for the Rangers to have Mike in that roll as super utility in-fielder as well. And with how injury prone the Rangers are have Mike on the bench would have been nice.

Again I don't like what the Rangers are doing, and I don't blame Mike.

I'm a diehard Rangers fan. But screw them. The way they have treated Young throughout his career is very unprofessional. And he was what this team was about last year, it is ridiculous. I hate this.

I guess I'm a heel, or maybe I'm just not as big a Young fan as some, but seeing him go just wouldn't break my heart. I'm glad he got to the WS here after all these years, but there's nothing that special about him anymore, and if we get good value in return I'm fine with moving him. I guess I'm all for that Belichick kind of mentality.

That said, with his contract I bet in the end we have a hard time moving him for fair value, and he DHs for us this year.

If they do it, it will be a salary dump.

I dont know I just think he means alot to the team. Those guys are important.

I wish they would have known they were going to this earlier with beltre, they maybe could have found a way to use holland and young and other to get greinke.

now they will get nothing for him.

When spring training rolls around in a week, this team will enter its clubhouse without the guy who gave them all that confidence in Cliff lee down the stretch and the guy everyone leaned on in the locker room during the tough stretches in Michael young.

I have no idea how you replace that. There are going to be some guys looking around funny at some people early on.

The only positive I can see is maybe they have more money to chase a pitcher in the summer even though there seems to be at this point nothing worth chasing and that maybe David Murphy becomes the DH. I like murphy and have always felt the more he plays the better he is.

Michael Young speaks...expects trade...thinks time with Rangers is over

Michael Young said Wednesday night that he has asked for a trade. But he said it's not because he has had a change of heart about being a designated hitter.
"I want to be traded because I have been manipulated and misled in this process," Young said. "I don't want to take it anymore."
Young does not see this ending up with him staying with the Rangers. Apparently this has gone too far. He would not get into the details on what happened to make him feel this strongly.
"I would have prefered this to stay behind closed doors," Young said. "The shame of this is I have a great group of teammates that I've grown to love. But at this point I don't think (it can be worked out). I think a trade is going to happen."

Oh god, shut the hell up MY. For God's sakes. You got a huge freakin sweetheart deal of a contract you can't possibly live up to and you want to whine and complain about being backstabbed because the Rangers move you around the diamond? Dude, for 17 million dollars a year, you can use me as HOME PLATE if you want. MY gets at least twice the money he is worth, sucks in the field, and whines about the Rangers jerking him around.

I used to like MY. Even when he was overpaid. Even when he wasn't getting to the balls that an average SS and 3B could. Even when he was watching grounders skip past him. Even when he looked like Roger Dorn at 3rd. He can rap out 200 hits and is a pretty good offensive player. But its not like he isn't replaceable. It's not like they couldnt find about a dozen other players that will get on base just as much or more, and probably hit for a little more power too (and at less than half the cost). This is the second season of this garbage. I am now officially sick and tired of his crap.

Good riddance. I hope we can somehow find a way to trade him to the Angels so we can roll over him every year on our way to the AL West championship. Do it JD.

apparently you have been watching a different player for the last 9 years than I have I guess.

Wow he makes a bad play and you are harping on it like it is inidicative of who he is as a player. He also won a gold glove at second and short.

I never get over how fast the media and the fans in this market just dump on their own guys. Its amazing. That is why it totally makes sense to me that aikman and staubach got boo'd here.

It's weird, normally I love the great leader/clubhouse type guys. I don't know why I don't quite feel the same for Young. Someone on Newberg compared him to Greg Ellis, and I wonder if that isn't kind of accurate. I know he's a class guy, but maybe he just seemed extra good on a decade of lousy teams.

Anyway, in 2011, Young is vastly overpaid and he's declining pretty rapidly. It's sad that people and players get old, but they do, and teams can't hold spots for players forever. I'm glad JD isn't the sentimental type.

Anyway, Evan Grant has even more on this, and Young is definitely trying to burn the bridge to the Rangers. Just hope we get something of value for him. I have a feeling he's not held in as high esteem around baseball as he thinks.

I saw the ellis comparisons and that is completely wrong. Ellis wanted to be traded before he was ever asked to change positions, he was mad spears took his spot and playing time. He asked to be traded at the end of the 05 season.

Young never did that. And its lazy on their part to say that. Bob sturm said it too.

as far as being overvalued or thinking he is better than he is that is bogus. Plenty of teams would like to have him, not at that salary but again young didnt sign himself.

in the end this is going to end bad for young and eventually jon daniels when the team is not as good as it was last year.

I simply never get over how people under value the things that a guy like young brings to this team. It happens all the time with teams and they never recover.

I don't see how it's that different. Ellis was a good player and good guy on a bad team for years... So much so that over time he came to believe that he should have a say in GM decisions. The truth is that he was on the decline, and like all old players, the team looked to upgrade him when they could. The team was right to get Spears to play 34 end and Spencer to play OLB, and the Rangers were right to get Beltre.

I mean, I'm sad he isn't the 2004 Mike Young anymore, but he isn't. And we're happy to keep him around for his leadership as a DH -- he's the one who doesn't want to do it. He even told Nolan that it was because he said once you're a DH, teams think you can't play in the field anymore and he was thinking about his next contract. So maybe even this is more about money than it seems.

I understand all that.

But ellis wanted out at the end of the 05 season before anyone told him about becoming the starting olb. He was mad that he had to share snaps with spears, which was the right move.

Young didnt ask for a trade when he went to short for siriano. He asked for it when he was told he was moving to third for a minor league player. And to his credit as soon as he met andrus and talked to him he immiediately said it was a mistake and thought it would work out great.

the issue this time is that they told him he would be the DH and then went and tried to get thome or manny to become the DH. So he is worried he will not get that many at bats.

and I think that is a legitimate issue. If they want him to be the everyday dh and utility guy why are they searching for these older expensive players to play DH?

I understand the team needs to always improve, but I also understand michael young is not so bad that many are now claiming that he should just be dumped and shipped off because he is a problem....Especially when now moving him means you have a DH issue possibly. ALthough I would love to see murphy in the lineup everyday.

like I said, imo. In the end this will now end bad for young because of the fans and media in this city who turn their back on everyone at the drop of a hat and it will end bad for daniels because this is one of those season altering clubhouse changes. Daniels will feel the brunt of that in the future.

either way, bad for the fans all around.

His OPS was <.800 3 of the last 4 years. That can play at 2nd, and SS, but at 3rd and 1st it's harder to justify (Not to mention the 16M a year). Even worse at 3rd considering he was below average defensively.

I understand the aspect of losing a clubhouse leader and lifetime Ranger, but maybe its for the best. I mean, this team is full of young talent that are blossoming at the MLB level. Maybe it's best to let them lead themselves now.

Beltre is a better player, hands down, right now. And Hamilton strikes me as the kind of guy that other players will follow. Especially the younger guys, because he's a little closer to their age.

Sad to see him go, but the team may be better off in the long run. And once the pitching catches up, Michael Young probably isn't going to be a championship level player at any position anymore.

I don't know that it's fair to say Young gets screwed. Young started his career in professional baseball as a SS, so it shouldn't have been a big thing when he was asked to move from 2B to SS. I kind of felt it was a bit much asking him to move to 3B, but Young clearly didn't have the greatest range at SS, and Andrus has a huge future, so if Young was willing to do it, then what the hell? Unfortunately Young didn't turn out to be as good at 3B as I would have thought.

I don't know what happened, but I will hate for Young to leave. We honestly don't have a defensive position for him, but he is a great guy, a professional and a leader. Whatever improvement we make with Beltre at 3B will be offset to some degree by losing Young's presence.

One move we made this offseason I like is getting Brandon Wood. Obviously there is a big question mark after he missed so much time with his arm injury, but if he can come back as even 75-80% of the pitcher he was it will be a huge boost to the team.

I'm not so sure Young is all that mad about being moved to DH, what he is mad about is they said that he was going to be their permanant DH and be an everyday player just not in the field. After they sign Beltre they still pursued Thome, Vlad, Manny Ramiriz and got Napoli (I don't think he was brought in to DH, but this might be Young's thinking). It was like "yeah Mike you are are our man (unless we can get thome or vlad back)!" And they were also floating him around in trades. I just don't agree with management right now.

Do you mean Webb? Yeah I have no ill-feelings toward that move. But again like the rest of the pitchers on this staff, he is another shot in the dark. Which I hope pays off
