If anyone falls for "pro day" numbers instead of combine numbers, they're the type of rube....er.....intelligent business person who'll fall for that.
Why, exactly?
Do you think pro scouts simply take the word of the schools? If so, then maybe you want some of my ocean front property in MO.
All the scouts from the teams bring their own measuring tape and stopwatches. They time the players themselves.
Gil Brandt pretty much stated this. He said the Cowboys fell victim one time to a school having a "short" forty yards. So, he always brought his own tape. This really helped him one time at a smaller school. He stated that he went to this school to get forty times on two players they had been scouting. They had done research on the guys, but wanted to see if the forty times would confirm what they thought.
Anyway, he layed out two tires as a starting spot then went to measure forty yards. After carefully measuring out the forty yards he had both players run their "forty" times. Amazingly, both guys ran sub 4 second forties. Thinking something was amiss, he had the players run it again....same results.....Finally, he remeasured and discovered that the players had moved the tires five yards closer when his back was turned.
Sorry to give a long story....but NFL teams have done their homework on Manningham. By all accounts, he was considered a deep threat with some speed before the combine. Most were shocked when he ran a 4.69....
Now, why is it so improbable for his speed to be in the 4.4/4.5 range? Scouts seemed to think him fast on tape.....I'm sure that all of them brought their own stopwatches....and I'm sure that most of their times are pretty comparable to what was reported....maybe not as fast, but they'll be comparable.
