Mickey: make no bones about run intentions

Feels like I’ve been reading an article like this every year. THIS year we will focus on the run game more and have a better offense.
Déjà vu all over again.

“I’ve been where Kellen has been,” McCarthy said. “Kellen wants to light the scoreboard up. But I want to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense. Think when you’re a coordinator, you know but you’re in charge of the offense. Being a head coach and being a play-caller, you’re a little more in tune.

I understand your hesitancy to buy into it but it is a new coaching staff and lots of the staff they brought in and some of the players they've been picking up so far with the draft ahead says that this probably is an actual legitimate statement.. And really they've only truly had two years I can remember that they've not addressed the run game the way they did last year and that was last year and in 2015 they both tried running back by committee both had a terrible year because the quarterback got injured there were injuries all over the team and it made it look they weren't addressing it but towards the end of the year they did finally lean on the run game the offense looked better I hope they're just there's gonna be an extension to that and that's gonna be the norm going forward..

The barometer of this would be the red flag if they don't pick a running back in the draft in the first 3 rounds and they wait till like round 5 even though they can get a good guy down there that's not going to look good for this new philosophy about the run game so we'll see where that holds true or not in the draft....

But when you have a lot of injuries and aging players along the offensive line and then the backfield and your coach is not that creative doesn't know what to do with his backups sometimes it'll look like it did last year.. I don't think our run game was as bad because we didn't address the running back situation it definitely was Mike McCarthy and whatever he was thinking coming out of camp had a bad plan and then it just got worse as the year went on I mean after the Pittsburgh game I fully fully expected for Rico to get the full load the rest of the way and it took weeks for that to start to happen I expected when Brandon cooks was out most of the year and we couldn't find a lot at the number 2 wide receiver they find a way to get Turpin involved earlier and they didn't until too late and that is why this staff is gone and I'm hoping that's a wake up call for the new staff....

But again I regress I understand your hesitancy to believe anything until we see it...

The draft is really deep and talented this year at positions we need. I wouldn't call having more darts meh. It's all about drafting wisely.

The one position that should have us deeply concerned s DT. We have Mazi and Thomas that can slide over and help but that's it. We must find 2 more dudes for the pecking order. Might need to draft Alfred Collins at 44 if we want a starter at dt. I feel he's ahead of Mazi right now.

Btw, Mick puts out these Captain obvious articles every off-season just prior to the draft. He pretends it's some new thing lol.

2 factors
....teams will have Dak audibling out to a pass by just showing 8 in the box early... Dak more than happy to air it out.

....if Jerry take a wr at 12....boys, he gonna throw at him and Cd..

I agree about Quinn but Moore had to go... His offense was too vanilla and too easy to predict.
Yes, but the thing is Quinn, he wanted to use S's as LB's. That did not work, and he insisted on it.
What does he do in Washington, he uses the LB's, the way they should be.

I think he sabotaged the defense, especially in the GB game.

Everybody wants to run, but you have to be able to do it. IF it’s coaching, it’s the OL schemes because our guys haven’t been able to create push or gaps.

We dump Moore because we ‘want to run’ and two years later he has a 2000 yard rusher. It’s not play calling.

So if we get better at run blocking we’ll have a running game and it will get called more. If they can’t then we won’t.

And I don’t really think it’s RB - I haven’t seen too much of the RB not seeing the holes or not being good enough to take advantage of them. There just hasn’t been much space.

I think running the ball successfully can effect a team more than any other aspect.

1) Keep their defense on the field and tired
2) Keep our defense off the field and fresh
3) Clock control and management.
4) Dictate the pace of the game...faster/slower
5) Not as hard on the o-line (extended pass protection tires them out?)

And yes...of course they still need deep threats and a defense that CAN shut it down. Of course all aspects need to be strong as it all works and spins together... but an effective run game does so much.

I agree with what you say. My only thing is. The cowboys had one of the best running games in the league during zekes prime and in 2014.

But we never had the complete team around it.

So while I’m ok with building a run first team. It just doesn’t mean much to me until I see the other pieces put in place also.

Lost me in the first fourteen words.
I can pinpoint the time I stopped paying attention to Mickey. It was Thanksgiving during the Campo era. The Cowboys had just lost to the Broncos after falling behind by 16 in the fourth quarter. Yet, they actually managed to score two touchdowns in the final minutes. The canker? They kicked the extra point both times rather than going for two and ended up losing by two.

Naturally, everyone was blasting Campo for his egregiously moronic call not to go for two. It’s literally basic math.

Then along came company man Mickey with a sub-80 IQ defense: “Hey, a two point conversion is no sure thing.”

Well, no. It’s not. But it’s a heck of a lot more likely than recovering an on-side. And you can still go for the on-side if you miss the conversion.

If this foray into utterly braindead analysis wasn’t enough, Mickey doubled down when Parcells was hired: “Hey, Parcells brings credibility. When he opts to kick the extra point in the same situation, people won’t question it.” Lost here is why Parcells brings credibility. He generally avoids stupid decisions.

If Mickey isn’t an idiot, he’s more than willing to play one for his boss.

I'm not entirely sure I want "run first". What I want is the right personnel, the right calls and the right time and a commitment to it. No more 3 passes on 5 and goal.

One more thing I want to see...every now and then, at least one lineman heading up the field looking for someone to pancake. That usually means there's been a hole to run through and extended run blocking.

Did you see what Barkley did with the Giants' OL? Top RB FA costs 15M, Top OL FA 35M..Where's the value???? The trouble with idiot Cowboys fans is that they want to win next year. You have to build a foundation first and that starts with the trenches. Build for 2027...
we have been building for 30 years. the fandom is sick of waiting.

Jeanty doesn't need a great line in front of him. That's the beauty of him. But he's the only RB I'd draft in rd 1 because of that. To me, the drop off from him to the next group is significant. He's generational on film. The question might be the competition level he faced. That part scares me a bit. We need to draft 2 backs. One bruiser like Mafah or Mullings, then a take it to the house guy. In the meantime, we must solidify the Oline or it won't matter much.
Barkley would argue that point.
