Mickey Spagnola: Romo changed play with a "smile"

According to Mickey on Talking Cowboys, the 62 yard TD to Roy was originally a go route, but when Romo noticed one safety com into the box, he looked at Roy and smiled and Roy knew to adjust his route to a slant, or flash, and beat the jam; leaving nothing but open field in front of him.

I just wanted to point this out because if their connection has already developed to the point of eye contact and facial gestures, perhaps their chemistry is much further along than many of us realize.

Anyway, I thought it was a pretty cool story, and it also backs up the report of Romo calling the plays, and adjusting the play according to what he's reading from the defense. I hope to see much more of this throughout the season.

Roy said he kept asking for the fade, and Romo told him to run the flash. I'm guessing "smile" does not mean 'run the flash', but the second Roy got out there and Romo saw where the safety was he looked out there and grinned knowing they had it no problem.

I remember Randall Cunningham did this to us with the Vikings. Ended up throwing a bomb to Moss for a TD.

I thought he was a cocky mofo at the time for doing it, but now I just realize it was to change the play.

Might have been. But I just remember they were cutting away to a commercial and had that play as a replay with Romo winking at Owens while under center...it's so vivid in my mind down to that SNF country/rock song playing as they go to a commercial with Al Michaels narrating.

He's at his best when he's out there having fun.

For the first time all season I saw him throw receivers open, instead of throwing to open receivers.

This might be the thing that gets it rollin a bit.
