Mickey: Time to Fill Up the RB Tank

Look as much as some of that is true come on let's just say after the 4th round it's tough but the Cowboys themselves have had so many great players in the 3rd round and many in the 4th round ,that we're talking about our scouts, they seem to find really good players in that area ,yes starters & some pro bowlers...

Odds are bad and really all the rounds you can miss in the first round or even the top 10 in the first round just as hard as the third round yes there are bus all over the league that's why guys fall, they get drafted late, or they become undrafted because it's not an exact science...

In my opinion the mistake is having the combined and then all this time to overthink they really need to have this draft in March in my opinion it shouldn't be too far after the combine I mean mock drafts are starting in January and it ramps up in February but it's hitting its peak at the combine there isn't a whole lot left to get your boards ready you don't need that much time..

why not the last week in March or the first week of April?

IMO There'll be a whole lot less waffling and overthinking if you had it sooner.
I dont completely disagree. I would absolutely argue that the Cowboys are one of the better drafting teams, especially once you get into the mid rounds. Bland was a 5th, Ferg a 4th, Dak a 4th, and have even gotten solid production out of guys like Armstrong (4th), Biadasz (4th), etc. but the majority of those guys are still going to be the John Ridgeways and Semi Fohokos of the world who struggle to even make the roster end end up bouncing around the league. Its a tough year to do it due to the depth at RB in this class, but if they think a guy like Jeanty is a future superstar type I wouldn't be scared at all to give up a few picks on the backside of the draft. Just my personal opinion, but I think hitting on those 1st round picks is the most important thing you can do in the draft.

Trade back TWICE in the 1st round.

Trade down into the early 20s and pick up an extra 2nd round pick. Then trade down again with KC and pick up a late 3rd, 4th and 2026 3rd.

That would give the Cowboys in this year's draft: (Rounds 1 - 4)...

Round 1: #30
Round 2: #44, early #50s
Round 3: #76, #95
Round 4: #133

That is 6 draft picks in the Top 133 (Rounds 1 - 4).

It doesn't include 7 picks left after the 4th Round (Rounds 5 - 7):

Round 5: #149, #174
Round 6: #204, #211
Round 7: #217, #239, #247

That would be 13 picks overall from Rounds 1 - 7. Absolutely would allow the Cowboys to fill every hole in need, plus double up on a position, two or three.

The key is if both Jerry and Stephen are smart enough to make such trades twice in the 1st round in order to pick up key Day 2 and an early Day 3 draft picks to add to their current 10 draft picks.
Don't forget the 3 players that got in trades. Using a 5th, getting back a 6th, another 5th, getting back a 6th, and a 6th getting back a 7th.
Elam, Murray, Milton. They had 10 picks, made trades and maintained 10 picks.
This is like getting 13 players, 16 with your trade scenario.

2 of those step in immediately over those draft picks, and a future QB prospect, who has NFL game experience.

Build the lines - a solid OLine solves the passing game and can block to make the running game effective enough to keep defenses honest.

Trading down is obviously the best bet for a team that relies upon the draft as much as we do.

I agree with you. And I agree with what John Harbaugh said- there aren't enough hours in a day for a player to be truly a 2-way player.
The day of the two-way player is long gone. The Cowboys are pretty much the only team in the NFL with a two-way player, and he doesn't sniff the defensive side of the ball. Turpin plays on the offense and Special Teams.

I heard that just the other day on sports talk radio. He has to be serious, or why else would you say that? If I'm a coach, I let him do it until he realizes he can't. Or it just doesn't work. If I'm him, I stay quiet, and hope to play spot duty at the other position when needed. IMO that would be the best course of action.
When you have a HC like Sanders, barking in your ear everyday about how great you are, well you get the picture why Hunter is making this insane demand right before the draft................

Another nice article from mickey, straight forward, no company fluff.

Talks about past history of the great Dallas RB's, and a few others.

He is pushing to go get Jeanty. Said if he drops, should they trade a 3rd round to move up to select him.
But also acknowledged the need to fill other holes, and wait on a RB since there is depth. But sure is high on taking Jeanty.

Said a need for a pass rushing DE, but after Carter, there is really no one there at pick 12. So trade down, then they take take one and get an extra pick.

I rather stay put at 12 & move back into the 1st and grab Omarion Hampton if he falls toward end of 1st
