I understand the Defensive tackles depth is not as strong as last year, but does anyone have any names for a potential third round pick who brings similar attributes at Maliek Collins? A guy who may be system dependent but can create pressure from the interior?

The draft can go a million different ways, but I would love to find a starting caliber DE at 28, a Safety/DB playmaker at 60 and in the third round find a guy with similar attributes to Collins. The more depth and guys who can get pressure on the interior, the better I believe this defense will become.

They've had Jaleel Johnson from Iowa in for a visit

Bottom Line
Active defensive tackle with the motor and athleticism to find production in the NFL. Johnson doesn't have the functional anchor that teams looking for a run-stuffer will be after. However, his effort, foot quickness and hand usage should create opportunities for him as a pass rusher. Johnson has the talent to become an eventual starter as a three-technique in a penetrating defensive front and could fight for rotational reps early on as a rookie.

Thanks. He looks to have a similar build to Collins as well.

Larry Ogunjobi DT Charlotte who they met with early in the process.
Not sure the competition that UNCC plays but his hustle on his highlights seems be something that Marinelli looks for. Is he a guy who will go before the third round though?

Looks like another 1-gap rusher that Marinelli likes. He seems a little be bigger than Collins. Maybe he can be our Terrell McClain at 1-tech? We definitely need another interior rusher (a real DT....not a beefed-up DE).

I don't even see us going DT in the mid rounds honestly. Would be hard for a 3rd/4th round DT to be on the active roster with Collins, Thornton, Paea, Crawford, and Irving all getting snaps inside. We're probably looking for a guy to compete with/replace Ash as the undressed emergency DT. I'd suspect 6th at the earliest with 7th/UDFA more likely. I like Tanzel Smart and DJ Jones as late round guys but not sure how long they'll stay on the board

Crawford is a crap shoot every year to be healthy, not sure how secure he is with that cap number.

I'm not as high on Thornton or Paea being able to replicate the impact that McClain had last year at 1DT (finally healthy...like it was a contract year or something:rolleyes:). Crawford is going to be taking the left over snaps from Collins (a real 3DT) and Irving (who should be our starting LDE). But you're probably right. We haven't shown too much interest in drafting DTs (last year seemed like an anomaly).

You may be right but the position can definitely be upgraded. I am not sure Paea will even make the team and Thorton and Crawford better step up there game or they will not be here after next year. If I can find a guy who produced like Collins did as a rookie, I would be all over that. This team needs difference makers up front. The veterans on the line have just proven to be guys. All those guys can be upgraded.

I hope you're right, you wouldn't hear me complain about Crawford being pushed off the roster for younger, cheaper talent. Just don't think this is the year for it. There's little to no cap benefit from cutting now if I remember correctly.

Think you gonna find its not Paea who is in trouble of holding a roster spot. To players who had best have good years or they will be gone are Thornton and Crawford.

I think both of you are overrating McClain. I have a good amount of confidence that Paea can be just as good, if not better, than McClain. McClain did flash a few nice plays every once in a while, but overall he was really nothing special. And I expected more from Thornton as well. Maybe the transition to a new scheme took longer than expected and he'll be better this year?

Either way, Collins earned the right to be the unquestioned 3 tech going into this year and we have Crawford and Irving as the backup pass rushers behind him. And Rod just doesn't value the 1 tech spot so there's no reason to expect more of an investment than Thornton and Paea.

I'm not saying we have great DT's and they can't be upgraded, I'm just saying that realistically you shouldn't be expecting much more to be invested into the position given our treatment of DT in recent history. I think they will have to really love a guy and be blown away with value for us to go DT in rounds 1-4.

Dalvin Tomlinson.

Man would he be perfect lining up next to Collins. Dominant against the run with more pass rush than you think.

Jaleel Johnson. D.J. Jones.

Good names. I like Jarron Jones too from ND

Davon Godchaux
Vincent Taylor
Carlos Watkins
