I was listening to Mike & Mike and they were talking about rules to protect the QBs.

I could have sworn that I heard something about a "Brady" rule getting passed.

Haven't been around too much so I don't know if it has been discussed but has anyone else heard anything about this?

Basically they're going to prevent defenders from diving at the QB legs when they're on the ground.

Ex. Brady's injury

From the article...
The clarification specifically prohibits a defender on the ground who hasn't been blocked or fouled directly into the quarterback from lunging or diving at the quarterback's lower legs.

What a freaking joke. I'm so sick of these guys creating a new knee-jerk rule every time a big-name player gets hurt.

Give me a break. I'd rather see them all wear knee braces rather than try to legislate safety. It doesn't work anywhere else in the world so why would it in football. Already too many rules.

Put a red flag on them and be done with it.

Pretty much exactly what it is too.

Basically punishes hustle play.

Thats not the only awful rule they are considering. They really are trying to ruin this game for us.

Owners Will Talk Rules Changes Next Week

Posted by jellis at 3/18/2009 2:23 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

All 32 owners are expected to be on hand in Dana Point, Calif. for the NFL Annual Meeting, which runs Sunday through Wednesday. They'll discuss all sorts of things related to the game, including the pending negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement with the players, but the most readily apparent changes on the way will be in the form of adjustments to the rules.

NFL.com is reporting the owners are expected to approve three changes made to improve player safety, all of which were recommended by the NFL Competition Committee after its meeting in Naples, Fla. last week.

One change would come from a proposed rule making it a 15-yard penalty for a defender to hit a defenseless receiver in the head with any part of his body. Previously the defender would have had to actually launch himself at the receiver's head to draw a flag.

Also, if a pass rusher is blocked into the ground around a quarterback or at the quarterback's legs he would be subject to a 15-yard penalty for continuing the drive forcefully into the quarterback.

And the league will also consider doing away with the wedge on kickoff returns because of its history of causing injuries. That would seemingly make things a lot tougher for special teams return units.

Those are all awful. I hope they don't pass.

Since they're discussing terrible rules, they need to go ahead and do away with that BS 5-yard automatic 1st down illegal use of hands penalty. You can't even play defense anymore, might as well make it a passing clinic instead of a competitive league.

I wouldn't be opposed to loosing the wedge. It's too much energy for players running a 4.5 or better to hit that wedge wide open. And I don't have trouble with getting rid of head trauma. My problem with the rule is it's too difficult for both the offensive or defensive player to avoid all head contact between either at the speed of NFL play. Not to mention the refs seeing it and getting it right.

It would be better to design better neck support. Although head trauma is not to be under appreciated, the rule is really going to prevent more spinal cord and neck injuries.

But that would help the defense. And since we simpleton football fans think that more scoring = better games, we can't do that.

In regards to protecting the QBs more, they already have protection, IT'S THE OFFENSIVE LINE!!

Forget it, just give them a flag, and the defense can just pull it.

Hardcore fans like those of us who post here hate this sort of thing.

But like it or not, the NFL doesn't make rules for our benefit. They have to market their product to tens of millions of casual fans as well. And casual fan doesn't care what rule protects Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, as long as Brady and Manning are playing.

The NFL looks at it's product without good QB play and it's pretty dismal. if you have good - or even just pretty good - QB play, you get a super bowl like we had. On the other hand, if you have poor QB play, think of any # of horrible games, like maybe Carolina against AZ in the playoffs. Jake Delhomme's play in that game made it unwatchable. How many of you honestly watched the 2nd half?

The NFL will try to protect the precious few good QBs it has. Whether we like it or not. If that means putting a dress on Tom Brady to make sure he stays on the field, that's the way it's going to be. Once sports became big business, that die was cast.

I think we'll eventually see Pro Bowl-type rules regarding blitzing and the QB.

Brady rule legal definition
n

Evidence or information favorable to the defendant in a criminal case that is known by the prosecution. Under the United States Supreme Court case of Brady v. Maryland (1963), the prosecution must disclose such material to the defendant if requested to do so. Under subsequent United States Supreme Court cases, the material must also be disclosed, even if not requested, if it is obviously helpful to the defendantÂ’s case. These requirements are collectively known as the Brady rule.

I hate how leagues...this and the NHL come to mind...cater to the fans who are half-interested and have no real investment. Making penalties to allow more scoring is great for fans who just want to watch fantasy players, but for real fans it is killing the game.

the wedge on kickoffs has been outlawed. 15 yard penalty at the spot of the foul if 3 or more players stand side by side protecting the returner.

Here is the formal language for the rule change involving the wedge block being outlawed: “After the ball is kicked, no more than two receiving team players may intentionally form a wedge in an attempt to block for the runner. An illegal wedge is defined as three or more players lined up shoulder-to-shoulder within two yards of each other.”
