Mike & Mike: Rule Changes?

They are asking defensive players to drastically re-program their brains. They are told get to the QB and bring him down. The guy that hit Brady was doing whatever he could to put pressure on Brady and unfortunately it resulted in a major injury. Throwing a flag on the defender on that play would be small solace to the Patriots because Brady still would be hurt. The new rule may deter defenders, but it is not going to be simple thing for defenders to learn. It is also going to be very subjective in the way it is called.

Next is the 10 monkey rule before rushing the QB.

I will probably be in the minority but I do understand why they'd make the Brady rule. If a defender is blocked to the ground, he can get back up and go for the QB again... but don't just crawl toward the QB and dive for his legs.

QB's have to plant that front leg and it is very vulnerable during and just after the pass. If you go for his legs and he just threw, then there is a better than good chance that you are going to hurt his plant knee.

For the defender: Try not to get put on the ground when rushing the QB.

Both sides have a legit argument I think. I can see the reasoning either way.

How does a 200 lbs safety not end up on the ground when being blocked by 300 lb linemen? It is a difficult game and sometimes the defender is going to end up on the ground or low to the ground. It was an unfortunate outcome when Brady got hurt, but I don't think a rule change is warranted from it.

QB's have to be aware of what is going on around them. The QB does not have to make that decision to step up, plant the leg and throw. He can back peddle, side-step or do the hokey pokey if he wants. Ultimately it is his decision and he needs to be aware of the situation and be prepared to suffer the consequences of his decision.

This rules sucks and will be yet another source of inconsistent calls and controversary if passed.

Any more incentive for these guys to just collect their money?
They get big pay days before they perform for their team. They're not allowed to give all they have to get the guy with the ball, - anything else I'm missing?

Football is fast on it's way to being something I used to love...

What a freaking joke. I'm so sick of these guys creating a new knee-jerk rule every time a big-name player gets hurt.

It's all about the "Benjamin" and one of the marquee players gets hurt they want to make sure that it doesn't happen again. No one complained about the "horse collar" until Terrell Owens went out from it, suddenly they have to outlaw it!

These guys are the bread and butter of the NFL's marketing arm and the source of a lot of their revenue outside of the games themselves, from jersey's to bobble-heads.

To me it sucks because they are turning the NFL into a money first business instead of the game it used to be. It won't be long before they just make tackling illegal and play flag football instead.

Might as well be playing baseball, bunch of dang pansies!

Also, why not make the QB move away from the guy instead of making the effort to throw the ball anyway? Why does the defender have to make a decision about whether or not he can legally make a tackle and the QB can just expose himself with impunity? How about if the QB is told that if he exposes himself then he might get hit in the head or the knees, so it is his choice if he wants to risk injury or not?

Oh yeah, offense sells seats! I forgot. :bang2: :bang2: :bang2:
