Mike and Mike are currently taking E-mails on which athletes will be the top five most marketable athletes five years from now. I sent in Tony Romo because I think with his personailty, being the QB of the Cowboys along with his heritage, will be huge maketability. Here's the E-mail: mikeandmike@espnradio.com

Thought it would be good for the Cowboys.

1. Tiger Woods (Retirement is the only thing that could stop him.)
2. LeBron James, F, Cavaliers (He still hasn't even reached his potential. Scary.)
3. Ryan Howard, 1b, Phillies (I think he may be assaulting HR records.)
4. LaDanian Tomlinson, RB, Chargers (May be cementing his legend as the best ever, or closing in on that designation.)
5. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (Whether you like NASCAR or not, this kid is a human gold mine for them.)

I might replace LT with either Yao Ming (if your talking worldwide) and maybe Maria Sharapova in place of Ryan Howard.

Howard may get there someday, but for the forseeable future, baseball is dominated by Derek Jeter. 1/4 of the crowd a Yankee Stadium and 1/8 of the crowd at away games seems to be teenage girls wearing #2 jerseys. That's a market that business loves.

Tomlinson's the best player in the NFL but he's never been a marketer's dream for some reason. He's well-spoken but hasn't seemed cash in on it yet. Maybe he just doesn't want the hassle.

Manning's the man when it comes to marketing the NFL right now, but I think Lance Armstrong still should be ahead of him.

Good points on Manning over Tomlinson.

I'm looking at it from a contribution standpoint over marketing which is not the point.

Next five years?

I think it will be the following:

Tiger (PGA)
LaBron James (Cavs)
Vince Young (Titans)
"Dice" Matsuzaka (Red Sox)
Greg Oden or Kevin Durant (Currently Ohio St. and Texas)

Matsuzaka doesn't speak english well enough. Phil Hughes is the name to watch from a marketing standpoint five years from now, he'll be playing in the top market and he got the "it" factor.

I don't think Young speaks well enough to have a ton of commercial potential either. Romo has a much better chance if he delivers on the field thanks to his speaking ability and his ethnic background.

Will Lance Armstrong be a factor in 5 years? He no longer races.

If Reggie Bush lives up to the hype, he will be huge in marketability in 5 years. I am not counting on it myself because that is a lot of hype to live up to.

LeBron and Dwayne Wade will be there in basketball. They are both still so young and should continue to get better on the court and both have a charisma about them that marketers love.

David Wright has to be in the discussion. Plays in a huge market and seems to be building a Jeter-like following in NYC.

Young is already there IMO. There is a big part of the country that doesn't really want a perfect english speaking representative. There is a certain draw to speaking to the masses, so to speak. The important thing is star appeal and Young has it. He is already a media darling and that will translate IMO. As for Matsuzaka, were talking 5 years here. In 5 years, Matsuzaka will be able to speak english well enough to do commercials. If he is what I think he is, it's going to translate. He is already HUGE in the Pacific Rim. If he dominates and helps the Sox win another championship, he's going to be very big IMO. Sox are not the Yankees but the same basic priciples apply. Big Market teams with Big Stars plus Championships will equal big money.

There's a few holes in his game that started to show in the second half last year.

Personality matters. romo is probably one of the most personable players in the NFL. It's hard to argue that. The guy oozes moxie and personality. Add to that the fact that he is the QB of the Dallas Cowboys, it comes down to just one thing. Can he perform on the field at a high level. If so, than I could see him all over the TV, especially in the Southwest.

By the way, Ryan Howard needs a few more years of showing he can hit HR's at that level. Remember Matt Williams? If it was not for the strike, he would have broken Maris' HR record 15 years ago. Point is, it's not uncommon in baseball to come back down to Earth once pitchers find your weak zone.

Young may be a "star" with a huge following, but there's a huge difference between that and having someone willing to pay him to endorse their product. He may appear on the cover of a video game and things like that but Corporate America isn't going to shell out millions to be associated with him.

And some of those in the know have told me that Matsuzaka is going to be good but not great pitcher after seeing him throw this spring.

I think you make a good point. Pujols is a better bet, IMO, to make it big with the media. He's young, he's a good looking young guy, he's family oriented and his values are right. Plus the fact that he's probably the best every day player in Baseball right now and is only going to get better. This is a guy who is probably most capable of winning the triple crown in todays game. He manages something like that and I can see his value going over the top. He could be real big.

It's a shame that Alex Rodriquez' PR people have done such a woeful job. Five years from now he'll start approaching the HR record but no one will care. The day he signed for $252 million he should have been announcing all the great things his charitable foundation is going to do with the money. He became the example of all that's wrong with baseball. Moving to the Yankees (and not keeping his mouth shut on a range of issues) hurt his image even more.

Sure, but he is marketable and is surrounded by great players on that team. He will be fine long term.
