Sorry....but it unfortunately, it looks to be coming...I do NOT get it....especially when we are talking about drafting a QB, and letting Junior walk a last ditch effort to see if Dak is salvageable. This is really catching me off guard here!! If we don't extend, we can dump him after next year...so why extend??? Wouldn't we obviously be committed to him for even longer....what am I missing here???
So you just want to have the same result as the last two seasons at best if we don't rework it?

That is the choice. Or we could sign some FA's and our guys we want to keep and to guys extensions.

I know I am all in on extending him and improving the team top to bottom.

Dak is not going to get better. He's had his best years. Going to keep him until he breaks down and then maybe a backup can beat him out as the starter. The Cowboys like repeating history. The Jones boys don't like to be wrong.

Have I been under a rock, or could this be true....listen at 5:38....in the words of Nancy Kerrigan, "why....whhhhyyy"??? Why in the hell would be the logic in doing this prior to seeing what he does this and possibly next season??? If this does happen prior to the season, I will officially be done with this rotten fish heads of an organization!!!

He's set to cost $49 million in 2023. Extending is the only way Dallas can bring that down. Cutting him would cost Dallas $89 million this year. Extending him would cut his cost for this season at least in half. Because he only has two years left on his contract, we can't really restructure him to move money; we'd have to extend.

It likely means that it wouldn't be feasible to cut him for at least a couple of years if we wanted to move on. But that doesn't prevent us from drafting QBs and trying to prepare an heir (who would be on a cheap deal when we do cut Dak).

I think the best thing to do with Dak is keep him until you find someone better. Start drafting/signing QB prospects already.

Only emotional Nancy's would be willing to sacrifice 10 years to find another QB without anyone proven for the likes of Quincy Carter/Chad Hutchinson types instead of Dak. Everyone knows that Dak poo'ed the bed against the 49ers and had a rough season overall but the facts are he can still play better than most QB's in the league when things are right AND the Cowboys should be trying to upgrade.

Both things can absolutely be true at the same time.

Problem is we don't have anyone. We sat pat with Cooper Rush to finally develop him into a back up. Now Dak has two years left or he can walk. Best option is to extend him now while it's cheap and help the cap. It might have to be a 2 or 4 year extension.

I hope he wins a SB next year.. We all need it. We hit the playoffs and catch a streak. Of course then it’s a team game. Lol. It’s a strange team and organization. We will see what next year brings. Likely another lousy 12 win season. But JJ will draft a QB. I bet he is going to start taking a gamble every year to draft a QB. He used to waste our second round pick on a gamble player. Let’s hope he don’t use the 2nd round pick. But will have a new QB people can beg to put in the game and cut Dak.

Well this was planned. No way they were going to let him take 50 million off the cap. Huge hit. This will be a good leverage tool for JJ. Since he was having int problem. He will not be getting a raise..

Just need the 2000 ravens defense to have a chance with Dak.

Players are typically extended with 1 year left on their contract. The only exception to the rule includes a 5th year option. But Dak is past that point. They should wait until after 2023. Maybe they want to do this early because of how great he was in 2022?

They really only have two options. Bite the bullet this year, but have little to no flexibility to improve the rest of your roster or extend Dak now to ease the cap hit.
I don't think people would care as much if that was their intention, to improve the roster. If they extend Dak, it won't be to improve the roster, it will be to sign their own players and trot that same team out there with the addition of rookies.

Am I the only idiot here that thought an extension was the last thing we would be considering? I honestly thought we were ALL in lockstep that 2023 was a do or die year for him....so why an extension? Why worry about softening the cap hit if next year may be the last year? And while we are at it, Diggs, Zeke, and Pollard need to go...sing a FA CB, trade for Tee Higgens....draft a RB.
Apparently, we're both idiots. If they extend him, it's to clear cap space to extend Diggs and Lamb. To give Pollard a new contract. But not to sign Tee Higgens.

Right now no one is making 50M. Another 40M with guarantees should do the trick. But if Dak is out of a contact in 2 years and we have zero options Dak will ask for 50M.

They are not going to extend Dak. Stop believing everything that is said. We are more than likely going to miss the playoffs next year, make sure you bet that and the $$ is yours. As soon as that happens with Dak under center, things are going to change in cowboy country. Bet.

It sounds like you will be done. The way I understand it is that a contract extension helps them with cap space.
