Mike Lombardi on Roy Williams

Your pomposity and dogma about this topic is inimitable.

"large parts" and "infallible" - Most of the article is accurate there are small parts that could be interpreted as hyperbole such as "blitzing him all the time"
Giving up 5 tds and being a targeted his nothing to do with being almost perfect or pretty good. Roy is constantly being exploited by offenses as was Reeves, but at least Reeves was a 7th rounder and playing to about what he was being paid.
I agree completely.

I sure as hell didn't see him blitzing all the time.. But when I did see him blitz, he got rocked by a RB half his size...

He got rocked by an oompa loompa?

I havent read this thread, but I thought I would throw this out there.

Newman was on with mike doocy last night and asked about roy williams.

Newman said "roy was bad in coverage last year and got the deer in the headlights reaction alot."

ummm. Anyone want to argue with newman?

To be fair he also said roy is working hard and it is important he keep his weight down and keep working. That was his complimentary statement to roy. He said everyone has stuff to work on.

You can watch the video in the local news video thread I put up.

Roy cannot blitz. He stinks at it. That play should be out of the playbook b/c he hasn't sniffed a QB in years.

This is interesting. It came up in another thread, and I was asking for a link, but it sounds like it's confirmed. Was his tone generally complimentary? Or was he throwing down a gauntlet? For a player like Newman to say an embattled teammate was downright 'bad' at anything is pretty strong stuff. I wonder if he's also one of the players who's reportedly not happy with Roy for missing OTAs.

And most would agree the clock is ticking and wonder why the rest are fighting over who gets to be the first one to say they heard the boom.

+1

no moves at all. he really should study how rodney harrison blitzes, and at least try to copy some of his moves.

He can't, he's at a charity event.

I agree... if Newman is saying that, then there definately is a problem with Roy's play.

Heck, Newman is considered the leader of Dallas' secondary and he might simply be tired of his secondary giving up easy first downs and touchdowns. It reflects poorly on him too, in some ways.

He shouldn't have to worry about that nearly as much this year. If Pacman plays we will have the best secondary that I've ever seen, IMO.

Bravo! People so love to say "I told you so!" They can't wait to say they called it first.

I don't understand the need.

Here's the transcript of the Roy portion of the interview (I left out most of the times Newman said "y'know" "um," etc., but it's otherwise word-for-word) --

Doocy: You've been a teammate of Roy Williams for a long time right now, and you know it's somewhat fashionable to take shots at Roy. His coverage skills obviously are shaky at times. Do you see .. what do you see is his future with this football team and are you worried about Roy Williams in any way right now in terms of his confidence or how he feels he belongs on this football team?

Newman: I don't .. you know, the funny thing is Roy had, coming into his rookie year, I think he had five picks and he showed that he could cover. I mean, he's the same guy, I think he just sometimes gets kind of a deer-in-the-headlights type of reaction to some plays, just gets caught. You know, not everybody's going to have a perfect season. He had a bad season last year as far as coverage, but I think he's doing the things he needs to do to get back on track.

Doocy: Do you think he is a liability back there, or do you think he can be back into a position where he is a strength for that secondary?

Newman:
Nah, I definitely don't think he's a liability. I mean, everybody's got something to work on. You can never be at a point where you can feel comfortable with what you're going on the football field. He just realizes what he has to work on. He's been trying to ... stay ... keep his weight down and work with the weight room ... in the weight room, getting stronger. He knows what he has to do.

so we're to believe newman when he says roy is a "deer in the headlights" (indirect quote) but we must ignore it when newman said he's NOT a liability?

this must be
1. he's being honest
2. he's being a good teammate and doesn't wanna dog on roy (of which he just did)

all at once even though this is pretty contradictory.

Jesus Christ. I should know better. I really should.

At one time Roy was my favorite Cowboy. Heck, the first Cowboy Jersey I bought my young son was #31 with Williams on the back. Although I hated Oklahoma, the play he made against Chris Simms where he basically leaped over the offensive lines was one of the best football plays I have ever seen in my life link. I said right then that I would love to have him on the Cowboys and was really excited when we drafted him. For the first few years he was a Cowboy, he played with the same passion he displayed in that Texas/OU game in 2001. The last few years his play has declined tremendously stats aside. He does not play with the same passion he used to. He no longer delivers big hits and although he has never has been great in coverage his coverage skills seem to have diminished even more. I believe he has lost the heart for the game. He plays for the money. At his age he should just now coming into the prime of his career. If he was in his mid 30's then his decline in play would be more acceptable. I sincerely hope that the change in numbers and the addition of Campo help to bring back the passion he used to have. If he continues to play as he has the last 2 years I hope this will be his last.
