Here's the transcript of the Roy portion of the interview (I left out most of the times Newman said "y'know" "um," etc., but it's otherwise word-for-word) --

Doocy: You've been a teammate of Roy Williams for a long time right now, and you know it's somewhat fashionable to take shots at Roy. His coverage skills obviously are shaky at times. Do you see .. what do you see is his future with this football team and are you worried about Roy Williams in any way right now in terms of his confidence or how he feels he belongs on this football team?

Newman: I don't .. you know, the funny thing is Roy had, coming into his rookie year, I think he had five picks and he showed that he could cover. I mean, he's the same guy, I think he just sometimes gets kind of a deer-in-the-headlights type of reaction to some plays, just gets caught. You know, not everybody's going to have a perfect season. He had a bad season last year as far as coverage, but I think he's doing the things he needs to do to get back on track.

Doocy: Do you think he is a liability back there, or do you think he can be back into a position where he is a strength for that secondary?

Newman: Nah, I definitely don't think he's a liability. I mean, everybody's got something to work on. You can never be at a point where you can feel comfortable with what you're going on the football field. He just realizes what he has to work on. He's been trying to ... stay ... keep his weight down and work with the weight room ... in the weight room, getting stronger. He knows what he has to do.
Cowboyz88 you just lost all your credibility as far as providing info without a link. You said you rewinded your Tivo several time to get Newmans quote but left out the bolded parts. Thats just plain ridiculous.

Your still my dog but you know you are wrong for that. I was kidding about the credibility(except when it comes to Roy:laugh2:)

And you claim to be neutral on subject of Roy and sick of the subject, yet here you are again.

Yeah, you're right. "Bad season" and deer-in-the-headlights mean nothing.

Obviously, he said Roy isn't a liability, but he did so after the other quotes.

Perhaps, just perhaps, he realized that he just threw Roy under the bus (just like Ellis) and knew he needed to immediately start damage control (just like Ellis).

Or, perhaps it's something akin to telling a girlfriend that you like her hair longer, then realizing that you're in for a world of mess unless you change directions and tell her after seeing her immense beauty, how much you've come to like short hair.

It's all speculation, but no matter how you slice it, using words or phrases like "gets caught," "deer-in-the-headlights," "bad season," "back on track" or "trying to ... stay ... keep his weight down and work with the weight room," Newman wasn't exactly heaping praise on Roy.

Wow, your still trying to defend that butchering of a quote? Dog, lay down. Obviously he said roy wasn't a liability? It would have been obvious if you have put it in your quote but you chose to hide that and now your trying to turn Newmans quote into something that works for you. Dude!

Again, you guys always focus your attention elsewhere instead of upon the real culprit, Roy.

Again, HIS TEAMMATE said Roy had a bad season, was a deer... and all the other things, and you have video that proves he said it, but you want to put the focus on my interpretation instead of accepting that Roy has now had TWO teammates throw him under the bus. Is it not plausible that he realized he made a mistake and tried to cover his tracks? Newman's the first to EVER do that???

How many do you need before you finally accept the truth? Three, Five, Eight, all of them?

no. i said i was SICK of the subject.

after the other quotes? so how the writer put it together vs how newman said it matters?

dude, i'm a writer. i move quotes all over the place to tell a story. not to put someone out of context but - to tell a story.

just put on your agenda-boy underoos and i promise i'll pay a grapic designer to design you an A for your chest and cape and you can run around the room and go WHEEE for us all.

at this point we're parents tired of children and don't care about justice, just want peace and quiet back.

you misinterpret that time and again to defending roy.

you have 2 newman quotes. 1 is gold to you, the other a lie.

how convenient, agenda boy.

LOOK! UP IN THE ROY WILLIAMS THREAD...

it's AGENDA BOY!!!!!

No need. I am a graphic designer, so I'll just knock it out for you.

You calling me agenda boy? I think I'll live.

As for Roy? As I said on another thread:

I fully admit that I'm one of the main culprits in the Roy debates, but even I have my limits.

I know it's taken me WAY too long (what can I say? I'm stubborn) to come to the conclusion that it's basically an internet version of Red Rover. One side calls a guy out, he tries to break the other side, then vice-versa.

That said, I'm tired, and I'm done....

for a while, anyway.:cunning:

Yeah, theebs. I conflated your recap with one from another poster in a different thread and then reacted to the wrong recap. You were paraphrasing accurately.

I thought that the Roy myths had ended already?

The word of the day is hyperbole, not myth...

Williams lack of athleitic skills and coverage skills limits what Wade Phillips can do with his scheme on Sunday, he is always trying to hide him and hoping he can keep him from being in space and having to play in coverage.

:hammer:
To be fair, almost all strong safeties have a target on their chest in coverage. You always try to isolate a strong safety in coverage. These guys are usually better against the run than against the pass. What made Roy great in the past were the big hits he would put on wide receivers and running backs after they would catch the football. I've seen several receivers drop balls while looking around to see where RW was. Over the last few years, I haven't seen as many of those types of hits from RW. He also seems to be out of position a lot. His problems do not appear to be physical problems. The problems appear to be mental mistakes.

hyperbole noun : extravagant exaggeration (as “mile-high ice-cream cones”)

My bad. He didn't get rocked by a running back nowhere near half his size. I stand corrected.
