Signed by Cowboys Mike Pettine to join Cowboys staff

Guess they decided to give him a real paycheck instead of whatever cheapskate offer they tried the first time around
It's about time, Ol Jerry finally understands the importance of good coaching and is finally digging deep. Out of pure desperation mode, season saving mode. This could be a good thing , Ol stubborn Jerry might have finally seen the light so to speak.

I got this straight off the Dallas Cowboys website and I'm not putting a link on it I know we're not supposed to but this is real Now I wondering how much input this guy's gonna have is this a good thing is is this gonna make some of y'all calm down a little bit?

Brian Schottenheimer promised the Dallas Cowboys would look at everything following the loss to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football, and he kept his word, adding one of the most respected defensive minds to the coaching staff.

Mike Pettine has been added as senior defensive assistant , a former defensive coordinator of the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills and the Green Bay Packers, and he most recently worked with the Minnesota Vikings to help Brian Flores form one of the more formidable defenses in the league.

"Had a chance to work with Pettine for a number of years, along with the Jets, and he's going to be here in a role to support everything that [Christian Parker] is leading and guiding, and we are really, really excited," Schottenheimer said on Monday. "They worked together in Green Bay, and this is actually something the C.P. and I talked about when we first hired him."
Schottenheimer then went into more detail about how much Parker was in on the decision to have such a respected, veteran defensive mind as another form of counsel in his first year as an NFL defensive coordinator.
A caveat here is that Pettine was defensive coordinator with the Jets only in name, and he had his most success there because the defense was actually ran by the head coach, Rex Ryan. The success of the Jets got Pettine his next job with the Bills, and the results were middling. He then had a bad head coaching stint with the Browns before returning as a middling DC with the Packers.

The numbers his defenses have had when he's been the coordinator (without Rex Ryan) don't put him in the same class with Flores. I like doing something here, and am OK with the hire, but it's not like we hired someone who used to regularly produce No. 1 defenses. The only time he did that was with the Jets, and it was Ryan's defense. Pettine was just his righthand man.

Complaining about the Joneses is like complaining about the weather.
Can't we pretty much say that about anything Cowboys? I mean, is complaining about Dak going to change the QB? Is complaining about No-Schott going to cause a coaching change? We have to live with what we've got. Doesn't mean we can't recognize the true problem.

Because CP is the DC and egotistical men can't handle demotion well enough to assist their replacement. That's just the blunt and honest truth.
Has Parker been around long enough and accomplished anything to even possess an NFL level ego?

I don't know. If your players have shown they can't regularly get pressure with what you are doing, then you have to try something different. Implementing blitzes isn't that hard since they aren't new to players. Making sure you have the right coverage call for the blitz you are using is where it can get complicated.
The problem is that our linebackers are not great blitzers. It’s a skill that not every LB has or at least, isn’t great at.

Overshown and Winters are sideline to sideline players, not upfield pass rushers.

If you look at a team like the Vikings or Bucs, their entire defense is guilt around blitzing so they draft and sign players with that specialty.

It’s a definite problem when your defensive line and your edge rushers suck at rushing the passer.

Actually a very good move as he and Parker have worked together in the past and he respects him. He was with the Jets under Ryan where they used a ton of pressure packages

No, it's not the same.

No, it's not the same.
To you maybe. To me, I'd rather recognize the true problems with this team than find scapegoats. No-Schott is a scapegoat. Dak is a scapegoat. Just like McCarthy, Garrett, Phillips, Parcell, Campo and Gailey before No-Schott and Romo before Dak.

Long-time NFL coach Mike Pettine is joining the Cowboys defensive staff, reuniting with coordinator Christian Parker. As the Packers defensive coordinator form 2018-20, Pettine gave Parker his first job in the NFL in 2019. When hired, Parker attempted to talk Pettine out of retirement. Now six weeks into the season, Parker has a veteran coach as a sounding board.

Have we sunk this low, good lads, at which time our DC gets a tutor and mentor?
Yoda, the way it is done is to fire the DC and name an interim coach who does not need a tutor and a mentor.

I don't know if I agree on that. I think blitzes come down to surprise and timing. Scheme is a big part of blitzing well.

I don't think this is about his tenure in the NFL (which started in 2019), so your question is moot.

I'm suggesting it's about the male ego. He's the DC. A demotion won't set well with him. So, the approach the Cowboys are taking is giving Parker a "senior advisor". That gives CP help and protects his ego.

We'll see how long this lasts, but it signals the front office has identified a problem with the defensive coaching leadership.
