Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce charged with neglecting pit bull found underweight and ailing
February 14, 2008

MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce was accused of neglecting one of his dogs in the days leading up to the Super Bowl.

The Middlesex County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals issued a summons Wednesday.

The group said Pierce's two pit bulls escaped from a fenced enclosure in his yard on Jan. 30 -- just days before the game. Pierce was issued the summons because one of the dogs was found to be underweight and suffering from a respiratory illness, officials said.

SPCA chief Walt Mychal stressed that Pierce was not charged with anything related to dogfighting and could face only a fine, not jail time, if convicted. In New Jersey, the SPCA has authority to bring charges in animal cruelty cases.

Pierce and the team would not comment, Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said Thursday.

Respirtory problem isnt his fault, and some dogs lose appetite when they are sick like that.

well yea obviously, but Im saying this isnt quite as bad as Mr.Vicks case.

He was out of town for 3 weeks straight. So he should have had someone there to take care of the dogs still.

oh hell no, this is like heaven compared to what Vick put the other dogs through

just saying that even not taking your pet to a vet when they are sick is cruelty, because you are doing nothing to help them heal, esp. when it's a respiratory problem

No where near the league of a Vick but Superbowl or not there should have been someone around to take care of the dogs for him. To fail to do that is still neglect, Superbowl or not.

To bring this and Vick up in the same discussing is a little silly. A upper respritory infection isn't the end of the world, we get them all the time, they're called colds.

The fact that he didn't even have them fenced securely enough to prevent escape, and that they had to be captured on the streets is much more of a big deal if you actually care about dogs. The fact that they were underweight and a little sick is nothing.

that's why you take them to the vet
Maybe he did, just because they found it sick doesn't mean it wasn't getting meds at home.

if the dog can't breathe, after all the meds, then it's time to put him to sleep

Having a respiratory illness and not breathing are two distinctly different things. Example: My father has a respiratory illness, but he can breathe.

You don't quite get it, a respiratory illness doesn't have to be severe to the extent that it wasn't breathing. The fact that it was out about town actually shows otherwise.

strong antibiotics can treat respiratory illnesses, the fact that he had one, means he wasn't treated for it, I just looked it up :)

maybe he just started coughing, who knows, but it was enough to where Pierce can face animal cruelty fines

You have a strong desire to make this a big deal, without really having all the facts.

A respiratory illness can mean all sorts of things. Minor to bad. The person supposed to be taking care of the dogs could've screwed off. Vandals could've left the fence gates open. Pierce could be a terrible human being. Without a bit more research though, this is just idle speculation and blather.

Need more info. He must have someone watching them when he is out of town; maybe they just got loose- it happens. the sick dog= depends on how long he had been sick and what was being done. No where NEAR enough info to make comparisons.
