Milton or Howell?

My guess is that going into the 1st preseason game Howell had a fairly significant lead on the QB2 role, even if that isnt whats being said publically. Milton probaly has to really look good to win the job, and honestly that goes beyond just the box score. Hes physically gifted enough to put up numbers against lower on the depth chart players. I think the key for him to have a chance to win the job, Milton has to show good quality details on film....playing on time, throwing with anticipation, how does he do on his reads against more than basic looks (which can be tough to evaluate in PS). If Milton does check all the boxes you can't deny his ceiling, but there are a lot of boxes he needs to check first.

Based on one preseason game this year, and potential running threat, Milton by a mile!

Everytime I watch Howell, I think about the pick 6 record being set game.

But for right now, let the competition play out

Joe Milton is a work in progress, while Sam Howell has experience as a starter. Time will tell if and when Milton develops his skills to a starting level. He's surely improved his play over last year. I'll be inclined to watch with interest to his upcoming performances in the preseason. Anything can happen. Right now, Howell might well be presumed as the favorite to start. That could easily be overturned.

Milton

Howell has all of the same concerns - decision making, timing, etc. - but without the arm talent.

If I thought Howell could come in and just not ruin things for a game or two, like Cooper Rush used to do, I'd keep him. But he's way too prone to mistakes to trust in that role anyway.

Milton is too inconsistent for it not to be Howell
I thought Milton had a great second half, he was accurate, he was poised, he wasn’t just throwing bullets,
I actually believe he used the future of the Cowboys

It's Howell. I suspected that decision was already made before a Saturday.

Howell has played well in the NFL before. Case closed.

But Milton did play well, especially after that tragic garbage he rolled out there we last year.

It’s about potential vs experience though. If it’s an equal playing field that job is Milton’s if they continue to do what they did. Howell is going to have to beat him convincingly. I don’t know if Milton has to do that he just has to be as good. They are looking for growth.

Howell, but in my mind it's much, much closer than it was before last night. I was impressed with both, but very surprised to see Milton play as poised and calm and focused as he did. especially taking some off his fast ball and focusing on his accuracy. Great job by both. It was a good night for Cowboys backup QBs
He showed a lot of "touch"...and it shows he should be given a chance. I htink we should try to keep all three. But I do like how Milton has learned things.

And...even if he does throw bullets...be ready and CATCH 'em!

Don't put your arms up too late. Be ready....you know it MIGHT come...dont't act like you;re that fast. Be ready!

Yup

Howell playing with a GTD contract. 2.5M cap hit.

Milton fills a role. QB3

Neither are likely to be Daks successor.

Just one game but Milton looks 100% better than last year. I think he will lock down his backup QB spot with a similar performance next week. Yes, Howell has more experience, but Milton's potential ceiling is much higher. Being younger and costing a 4th-rounder, this is now his job to lose, IMO.

Milton didn't cost a 4th round pick

He's been horrible a lot more than he's played well.

A 1:1 TD:INT ratio is about the worst thing you can have in a backup quarterback.
He played for perhaps the worst team in football with horrific offensive personnel. He did play well against us. LOL

The coaches like him.

I don't get the feeling that Milton is a great practice QB. He has the big arm and running ability, and that can cause you to get lazy at time with the technical stuff. The games may be slowing down enough for him now that he can get honed in on doing things the right way. We'll see if it holds up. He's had some pretty wild swings in level of play in the past.

Dak's successor is playing for West Side High School somewhere right now.

Or it's Joe Burrow. Please, please, please, please.....!
