I think right now we want him to be the backup. Hopefully, we learned our lesson with Lance and will actually give Milton plenty of opportunity to show whether we need to go get a veteran or give him a shot to be the No. 2 at the start of the season. All fair, but IS he a backup? or a developmental guy?
There’s a difference. Rush was a backup, Lance was a developmental guy.
Last year, with the season lost when Dak went down, they traded yet another 4th for a WR well on his way to bustville, then said Rush would start because they were trying to win games.
Have they done a 180 on this idea? Is the guy they paid even less for going to start if it happens the same way this year? What if they are 4-2 and Dak is out for 2-3 games? Milton or the veteran?
My complaint isn’t about Milton. I like him and have heard good things from people I respect. My issue is their plan is all over the damn map. They shouldnt have resigned Dak, at least not when they did, if this was how they wanted to go.
Even if Milton gets the shot to prove himself and does, there’s no way of escaping the massive dead money, void years, and no avenue at all to take advantage of Milton’s rookie deal.
I’m really mixed. Happy to have him here at that price, wish our FO could see more than one move ahead at times.
I don't think they'll go with Milton as the No. 2 IF he tanks the preseason. But I'll be surprised if we add a veteran before then. There's no reason to not give him a long look.
We know what Grier can do, so he can work cleanup, or some UDFA we sign can work cleanup. Dak is not going to play during the preseason, so the first quarter and possibly the first half of each preseason games will be Milton's showcase.
If we go get a veteran before camp after this signing, then I will question what the plan is. Right now, I think the plan is to give him a shot at No. 2 before making any other moves.
