That all works. Ultimately the cost was not all that high, but they DO need to have some sort of if/then flowchart type plan, and I’m having a tough time believing that they actually do.

I’d say best case is Dak goes down for 3-5 games, this season or next, Milton gets a shot to show what he can do, plays well, then maybe approach Prescott about a different direction for each side, which also depends on Prescott showing he can still play with the hammy, and very likely Dallas eating some salary.

Bear in mind this pretty much takes us out of acquiring another developmental guy along the way, but I guess that’s ok. He has skills no doubt.

Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms love Milton FWIW. Those two might have an idea as to what they are looking at.

It seems that perspective has been lost here by some fans. When we say Milton it should be in connection with Rush and cheap contract for the next few years.

Joe Milton is a cheaper backup QB with more physical arm talent than Cooper Rush. That is it.

If we are expecting anything else we are deluded. Only Joe can change the narrative right now, and one NFL game isn't enough for me. Let's see what comes out of Tc and pre-season before we get all worked up here.

While there is truth to what you say, I think we got him just as much for his potential to be more than just a cheaper backup than Rush.

Same reason we traded a fourth for Lance. Like with Lance, his potential is just that and nothing more. He may never develop into even a quality backup.

It seems to me that our fans always go to extremes, either Milton is just a backup and never will be worth nothin' or he should start over Dak this season. I think the hope right now is that he'll be able to take the No. 2 job and eventually be worthy of the No. 1 job.

I think we'll add a UDFA to compete with Grier for a roster/PS spot. I do think the desire to develop Lance in that third QB position last year kept them from being interested in drafting a QB. This year, I just don't know if they feel like they need to have a spot for Grier. I'd certainly be OK with spending one of our 10 picks on another QB to try to develop as well.

So trading the 171st overall (comp) pick for a project quarterback that the Cowboys hope can be the backup is an "obvious" sign the Cowboys realized Dak is not the guy?

I'm all for being glad that we might have found a potential backup QB for the future. Let's not get so carried away with wishful ideas that he'll solve our problems. There are far too many of them for any one man to resolve even one. As it is, Milton may well have his hands full being a backup QB. I fully expect that it'll take time for him to develop enough to find success. I like his chances but that's all.

Suppose it depends on if they want a “backup” with some starting experience or if they will do the opposite of last year and just go with Milton…should Dak get hurt.

It’s a fair question as to why last year they played the veteran backup as opposed to the developmental guy, and why has that changed.

Repeating myself, my issue isn’t the moves themselves as much as how does it all add up to making anyone feels as if this is some sort of actual plan to win?

Feels a lot more like a collecting player exercise.

They could still bring in a vet, but I think unlike with Lance, they are going to give him a legitimate shot at winning the No. 2 job before making any vet addition. Because we won with him, Cooper Rush had earned his role, but there's no such obstacle in front of Milton ... at least not at this time.

I wouldn't be surprised for a vet to be added if Milton falters. I don't think we'll go into the season with him as the primary backup unless he has a strong preseason performance.
