Minicamp Day 1 notes

Ceedee and Pickens are already established producers so the defenses will have to utilize more
We saw similar statements when Cooper was here and they drafted Lamb. Defenses don’t need to key on either of them. They just need to play Dak Prescott.

Cowboys Minicamp Day 1 Notes:

- WR George Pickens hauled in five receptions during the team period on a variety of routes. One comeback route completion against Mukuamu was the standout.

- Overall, a strong day for QB Dak Prescott. He went 17-for-19 passing in team periods and completed more balls along the sideline than we’ve seen today.

- Joe Milton went 8-for-8, including three receptions to WR Jalen Cropper who continues to find ways to get open in the offseason setting.

- OL Rob Jones left practice early with a clear grimace on his face.

- More reps with the ones for TE Brevyn Spann-Ford. He’s been one of the consistent standouts in media availabilities.
- Another PBU registered for CB Kaiir Elam today. DBs can’t be super physical in these settings, but he still finds way to get his hands on the ball.

i really like hearing the positive news about spann ford.

Bobby Belt on the fan saying Fergi taking 3rd team reps. I like it. Nothing should be handed to anyone

Don’t take me wrong. I will be a GP fan for at least one year. But, nobody could guard Brandin Cooks in camp last year either.
Well, again, these drills favor the receivers and they aren't facing off against the top corners on every snaps. But Pickens should be able to do a lot of what he's doing against any corner. When we got Cooks the wheels were starting to come off. He was a speed receiver who was losing his speed. Pickens should be in his prime.

Our DBs are gonna get abused all season.
If Israel Mukuamu or Andrew Booth is out there at outside corner, then I agree. I'm not sure how Elam will turn out and we know Bland is good. I'm just not sure about playing Bland in the slot, not because Bland can't play the slot but because it means playing players like Muku or Booth on the outside. Hopefully, Revel is ready to go at the start of the season and is what they think he is.

I could see Elam and Bland starting, then Revel coming in in the nickel and Bland moving to slot. I think that could be pretty solid, but there are definitely question marks.

I am interested in seeing if Caelon Carson shows any progress and if Butler can get back from his injury, because I think he played pretty well when he stepped in last year. I'm also interested in seeing if we explore using Thomas or Muku in the slot instead of Bland.

Like Pickens said when he got here, defenses can't double everybody. Imagine it's third down and the Cowboys line up Pickens and Lamb wide, with Turpin or Ferguson in the slot, and then motion Jaydon Blue out of the backfield.

Have fun with that, opposing secondaries.
Oh Yes,and that running game will be much better because of it.

I was actually thinking it would be the other way around.

Ceedee and Pickens are already established producers so the defenses will have to utilize more backers and Safeties to cover them....its our unproven running backs that should benefit from that situation.

If so, our running game could improve from having the 27th least of team rushing yards.

Use strength to elevate a weakness
The running game will improve this year because of coaching. We now have a coaching staff that actually believes that you must be able to run the ball effectively instead of just paying it lip service. Having an effective running game means defenses will have to stack the box opening up the passing game. A good passing game can also help the running game because they’ll have to double probably 2 WR’s.

You should listen to Scotty’s pressers. When he talks about the running game and stopping the run you can tell he means it. Something I’ve been preaching for years now.

Tell us what will happen?
I am not a seer or have a crystal.ball

I have expectations of what may happen based on what I have seen. He has degraded and under performed over the past couple of years. I expect him to be in the mix in 3 WR sets. With Tolbert and Turpin. And by mid season to fall in the back of the rotation.

Guys like him are intriguing and enticing because of size and speed so they are often given a lotnof chances to show it but when they fail they go down the pecking order. It happened to him in Carolina as well and he was 6th on that team and that's why when Jerry called and agreed to a 4th the Panthers shiet their pants because they couldn't believe it.

Comprehension is a thing still right? Nope, I’m comparing people saying that nobody could cover Cooks, just as they are saying nobody can cover GP
They also said the same thing when we drafted CeeDee. How could any defense possibly cover Cooper and Lamb. Turns out it wasn’t so hard, you just needed to play Dak.
