MISUSED and OVERRATED talent

First of all.....when I consider the talent in the NFC....it seems designed to make a mockery of the 3-4 defense. During the game my mother blurts out...the Dallas defense looks slow!!!! We get swept by Philly. In both games Philly's offense did what it wanted to do. We split with the Giants......BARELY. Again, the Giant offense did what it wanted to do in BOTH games. And we split with the Commanders...but that was with Brunell at QB....and to be honest, the Commanders have won 3 out of the last 4 against us.

I don't think we actually have the talent to run the 3-4. Because if you do not pressure the QB with this defense, it is USELESS and POINTLESS. Our LBers cannot cover, and the more the NFC East see's this defense, the better they will be able to attack it. Al Saunders, Andy Reid, and whomever calls plays for the Giants will continue to out scheme us.

The answer is NOT more money and players on defense....Parcells has gotten his wish for all the LBers and DL he wants. They are young. HE BETTER MAKE IT WORK...or the next guy BETTER MAKE IT WORK.

On offense...we have been getting by with smoke and mirrors on the offensive line. Julius Jones is NOT a Parcells type starting RB...and HE NEVER WILL BE. Our WRs our AGING......FAST. Romo proved he is just like all the rest of the QBs when he is pressured or not protected well. Our free agent money, 1st day draft picks need to be spent on WRs, OL, and RB. It is time for Parcells to find a diamond in the rough at DL or LBer....but no more 1st day picks on that side of the ball.

Totally agree. I was very excited about the prospect of the 3-4 and the deception of blitz. However, I think we run the only non effective scheme.
Also agree, we need to get nasty and powerfull on the OL. This is a patch work line that has been masked by Romo.

The answer is more money, in the way of a real DC to replace Zimmer.

Your mother is right. The Cowboys D looks slow. They look ponderous.

Other than Ware, the Cowboys don't have any obvious standouts at LB.

You need obvious standouts at LB for the 3-4 to work well. One just isn't enough.

Parcells not only has gotten what he wants at LB and DL, he also has a very expensive defensive backfield.

The fact that things haven't worked out better for this defense is extremely disappointing.

To be blunt, it makes me doubt the architect.

It seems like a couple of things could be happening here:

1. Perhaps he has built a defense with just the right combination of size, strength, and speed to rule the NFL of the 1980's and early 1990's.

The obvious problem is that we are in the mid-2000's and playing under significantly different rules (pass defense and hits on the QB). The game has changed quite a bit in the past 20 years.

Has the architect tweaked his blueprint much in the past 20 years? I'm not so sure that he has. And even if he has, maybe it is time for an entirely new blueprint.

2. Sometimes coaches are so caught up in their particular schemes that they try to force round pegs into square holes ... they force players into this or that scheme instead of developing a scheme that best suits the talents of their roster. This seems to be happening now with the Cowboys. Certainly it has happened with Roy Williams ....

Julius Jones is a high quality 3rd down (passing situation) running back with a significant flaw. He isn't reliable at picking up the blitz.

And so he is miscast as a starting RB. He's not the answer at RB. He's probably not even part of the answer at RB.

But given that Jones plays on the Cowboys, a team that also needs (or will need) help at LB, OL, WR, etc. you just have to decide if replacing Julius Jones is more important than replacing guys like Rivera and Adams.

I understand the frustration. I'm frustrated with this situation too.

But if Parcells has been able to find only one truly outstanding LB (Ware) and couldn't quite hit on guys like Burnett and James, we certainly can't count on Parcells hitting on a diamond in the rough at LB.
