MLB Playoffs...

You dont think that Mauer on second base would have scored after any hit in that inning?
I don't know if the inning goes the same way.

True........no question....

You can't make assumptions like that. Had Mauer doubled instead of singled, the next single doesn't get through......changes the whole dynamics of that inning.

But if you want to play the "what if" game, a really strong case could be made that the Yankees should have won 3-1 in the 9th. The Twins picked up two runs with two outs after Hughes had a clear strike three to Gomez somehow called a ball.

You are arguing a judgment call with balls and strikes. You can do that with any number of balls and strikes throughout that game(or for any game for that matter). The "double" by Mauer was clear double and isn't a judgment call but what should have been the RIGHT call. The ball wasn't barely a double or may have hit the chalk line it was CLEARLY inside the line.

maybe if George paid off the homeplate ump like he did the 3rd base ump you woulda gotten the call.

Sure wish the Rangers were in it. I was really looking forward to seeing them play in October. I guess that's my fault. lol

Maybe next year.

I realize that balls and strikes can be viewed as judgement calls but balls that are clearly a foot high like one that was called a strike on Swisher or strikes that are down the middle and called balls like the one to Gomez aren't judgement calls, they're atrocious umpiring.

Meriwether had a terrible game behind the plate. The networks use the K-zone to show balls and strikes. Teams don't, they use something similar but it refers to the individual umpire's strike zone instead of the as-written strike zone. Charting that game, he had the third most inconsistent strike zone of any game of the 2009 season. Inconsistency is a huge problem with any umpire but it's not as big of a problem as when that inconsistency isn't consistent. With the Twins batting, 11 "strikes" were called "balls" while 3 "balls" were called strikes. With the Yankees batting 2 "strikes" were called balls while 8 "balls" were called "strikes".

I believe that the catching in the game played some role, as the discrepency became even more pronounced when Posada entered the game for Molina.

Nice win by the Fightins.....hopefully win tomorrow, with Pedro Martinez pitching and take a 2-0 series lead back to Philly.

Torre's bad decision with Kershaw aside, the Dodgers bullpen ultimately failed last night. So the Phillies stole that one. Don't expect to see Sherrill give up a HR to a lefty like that.

And they had 14 hits... Game 1 was there for the taking.

The easiest sport to use replay and they barely use it. Alex Rodriguez was never tagged at home.

He was out. At some point, you gotta let it go. They lost 4-1.

The play at the plate with A-Rod was the right call. Also, the play at first base was the right call too.

What I want to know is how in the heck does that Matsui popup be considered a single? What is the official scorer smoking that he doesn't consider a sky high popup that falls right between the 3B and SS an error? I make that play in my sleep and I haven't played baseball in 20 years.

It's 3:09 pm the next day and A-Rod still hasn't been tagged.
