There’s always talk about Jimmy Johnson and the ‘90’s Cowboys. Of course, the roster was amazing and much of it was built pre-salary cap. JJ leaves and we win another Super Bowl. That’s how good that squad was, maybe one of the best teams ever assembled in the NFL.

It bears mentioning that JJ went to the Dolphins for 4 years and never won his division. He only had (1) 10 win season and had a losing record in the playoffs with them. By today’s standards, Marino was in his prime when JJ arrived (34, I think). It didn’t matter. Jerry Jones wasn’t far off base when he said that almost anyone could’ve coached those Dallas teams. We actually saw ‘anyone’ come in and win a SB.

The next time someone rags on MM, remember that there’s no substitute for talent on the field. The cap and the NFL’s desire for parity makes it very hard to sustain excellence, however you measure it. McVay won a SB a year ago. The Rams were horrible this year. Yeah, Stafford was out, but a few miles north, Mr. Irrelevant has led the 49’ers to the playoffs. McVay is supposed to be a boy wonder, and many here would dump MM for McVay in a second. Not sure it would make any difference, though.

Dog on Jones all you want, but he gets personnel. Too bad there’s a cap. Jerry is an owner that would pay the freight to field a SB contender every year.
The giants just proved coaching matters. With laregely the same players starting as in previous years they just won a playoff game.

The eagles prove nearly every year that the cap is as fluid as you want it to be. Meaning if you want to get better talent you can absolutely find a way to get guys signed even when you are already over or near the cap.

The Jonses uses the cap as an excuse to not pay someone outside of their organization much.

No idea what you mean by ‘Jones uses the cap as an excuse to not pay someone outside of their organization’.

NYG finally had a healthy Barkley and Daniel Jones played the best game of his life. Since coaching matters so much and they have the same players, why did they go 9-8 in the regular season?

Means exactly what I said. We can't say they don't pay anyone outside of the cowboys organization since they do but they don't spend big on anyone not already on the cowboys roster typically. The last time they did was amari cooper where they actually traded a 1st and then paid him later. vs what some teams like the iggles do, seems they target a big name guy every offs season and sign him along with other trades and the draft.

No one thought these same players would win 9 games, much less win a playoff game. If memory is correct I think most thought they might win 6-7 games this year. They ain't going to a SB but they have played much better than expected.

Sounds like you’re the one that needs to look at the stats.
You might want to back up a bit. You also might want to verify info before you talk smack to someone. 1996 was JJ’s first year in Miami. Take a look at Marino’s stats and tell us what a great year he had. I suggest you begin your search with Pro Football Reference.

Coaches don't matter and yet Trevor Lawrence was looking like one of the biggest busts ever until Doug gets over there and now that franchise is completely revitalized

I guess. I watch the 49ers and wonder why they always have guys running wide open ALL day and have huge running lanes and can throw Mr irrelevant in there and win. I don't maybe all those guys are just super high caliber.

I’m not in your ‘no one’ equation. We have a very good team and I fully expected a 10+ win season. I think we can beat the Eagles and the Giants, but I don’t think we can make It by SF.

As for signing free agents, we draft very well, so of course we want to keep our players. I’m certainly not on board the Rams system of giving away the farm to maybe win a SB and then be terrible for years afterwards. If you’re expecting the Cowboys to part with draft capital, then you’re going to be constantly disappointed.

Marino went to the Pro Bowl in 1995. He played 13 games in ‘96. Unless you think he fell off a cliff, maybe any drop in his stats came from the game plan, not his ability.

They sure looked good this weekend. I don’t think we can beat them if they play like that. Deebo and CM take a lot of pressure off a QB.

Purdy looks like Dak looked in 2016, if you ask me.

You know, players do have bad years.

Yes, they do, only reinforcing my original point. Coaches can only prepare their teams to go out and play. If the players don't show up for whatever reason, it's not usually on the coach.

You think MM coached the Cowboys dramatically differently this week as oppossed to last? Of course he didn't. Or when a team overlooks or underestimates an opponent, do you think the coach is in there saying, 'These guys are chumps. Don't sweat this game'. Of course he isn't.
