I felt like I was the only fan that jumped for joy when Jerry/Jimmy took over.
I was mainly in shock. I didn't know what to think. Didn't like Jimmy from his days at Miami though I knew he was a good coach and I didn't like the way Landry was treated. I wasn't out calling for Landry to get replaced even though I knew it was time.

Should have looked me up, I loved Landry but I was fired up and thrilled when Jimmy was hired (didn't know jeri was a dooshnozzle but ignorance was bliss).

Everyone was angry and I was telling folks to wake up, things about to get awesome and they did!

Tom landry should have gone after the drubbing at the hands of the rams in the 85 playoffs. The game had sadly passed him by.
We had a good start in 86 led by Herschel but it didn't last. Dorsett was pissed off. Our vets were aging and then the strike in 87 didn't help.
The flex D was easy to beat by then . The ne2 wave of coordinators had fugured it out .Time is unbeaten and I think that's when it beat Tom.

The real issue was the complete lack of talent on the teams. The job Gil Brant did drafting for most of the 80's was worse than the lean years under Jerry. Give Tom some talent and I think would have been fine as coach. That said, it was time for him to move on. Considering how he only about a decade left to live it was a blessing in disguise for him.

Perhaps the bigger issue was Tex Schram being unable to fire Landry or, better yet, Gil Brant.

Sham, on how the Cowboys nearly hired Marty Schottenheimer to replace Tom Landry before the team was sold to Jerry Jones in 1989:
“Most people who revile Jerry Jones do it because of his dismissal of Tom Landry. I always say, let's see how much you know, because Tex Schramm wanted to get rid of Tom Landry. I wrote a book in 2003 called ‘Stadium Stories,’ and one of the chapters I did was on Tex, and it was about six months before he died. I'd known him 35 years, but I spent a whole day with him, and he told me things that I didn't know. In 1986, Landry says to Schramm, ‘Get ready. Get the next guy. I'm thinking about [retiring].’ Landry hires the hottest young assistant coach in the NFL, Paul Hackett from the 49ers … He hired Hackett because Landry said get the next guy ready. Landry then proceeded to change everything Hackett did, and that was also the year that Herschel Walker got dropped in their lap in the middle of training camp. Landry then decides, without telling anyone, that he's not going to quit. And either ’87 or ’88 in the spring, Landry holds a press conference, and Schramm had Marty Schottenheimer in Dallas showing him houses. He thought he was going to hire Marty Schottenheimer to replace Tom Landry, who was going to retire. Landry has his press conference, and that's when Schramm finds out that Landry is not quitting. He says there's been a lot of speculation, but I want to tell everybody that I'm staying and I hope to coach into the ’90s, and we all thought he meant into his 90s. That's how Schramm found out.”

I remember how boring Landry's games were the years. I said please who ever takes "just don't bore me:mad:

Hard to fire old friends and better yet people who were responsible for a lot of your success.

I don't blame Landry because the roster was terrible by the end.

Looking back at the rosters, it appears that in Jimmy's 2nd season they had less than 10 players remaining that played for Landry. Three years later it was down to about 5.

Sounds just like Landry. He knew his time was short yet he was playing mind games, little girls' games. I am thinking of retiring. I am staying. Hackett is not doing it the right way ....
It continued with Sir Jones. Follow me across the state to fire me if you can find me. It wasn't (the firing) done the right way ... When Jimmy took us to the Super Bowl, Landry said he was going to be busy and probably not watch. So capricious. Such a juvenile all of the sudden. What a senile jerk.

After the loss to the Rams, Schramm was quoted as saying something to the effect of "We won't be playing next year with the same deck of cards." And my hope was he meant Landry.

They got old, brother and Tom lost a couple of steps.
The game did pass Landry by, but the biggest factor in that 80s downward spiral was the horrific drafting of the Cowboys. The game had also passed Gil Brandt by as well. When asked about the Cowboys bad draft results, Tex Schramm arrogantly said, "Its hard to get good players late in the first round where we usually draft because of our record." Other teams did as well as in the following rounds .

No you weren't friend. I felt very relieved changes were finally coming. The firing could have been handled better and Jerry shouldnt have been photographed dining with Jimmy before Landry was relieved of duties. Landry didnt help either when he left for his house in Lakeway after being told the prior day Jerry wanted to talk to him.

I actually thought the game passed Landry by when SF beat us in the playoffs in 1981. Walsh completely out coached Landry. Landry had his out dated flex defense in and Walsh put his passing package in. Landry changed to a nickel, then Walsh ran on him.

It was said Landry would only stay for round 1 of the draft, then leave and let Gil and Tex run it.

For those of us that endured the period from 1981 to 1989, at the end of each season many of us were hoping Landry would retire. It got real frustrating.
That is one reason I was not all rabid about Jones firing Landry. It could have been handled differently but it was time.

Loved Landry. He is the reason that America's Team is America's Team. A true legend. But as most fans will tell you, it was time for him to go. My only gripe is in the manner of which it was done. That was a disgrace and embarrassment and something I can never forgive JJ for. The man deserved so much better than he got. And it's a shame we went from one of the greatest coaches and Human Beings to that lowlife Jimmy Johnson.

Well look in the mirror if you want to see juvenile.

I know you are but what am I?
I think someone's is really butt-hurt because I nailed it as to your grandpappy's behavior. He was barely functioning as a coach. So glad Jimmy and the present owner stepped in to save Old Man Landry from further embarrassment.

And it was Landry who acquiesced to the drafting and all the other things going wrong. A HC does little hands on because there are multiple units, day to day personnel cuts, etc.
So it is easy to say Brandt was the problem or our draft order was the problem, or injuries or NY other thing, but the HC OKs the big picture and direction and that coach was old man Landry.

The firing could have been handled better . . ..

How?
Don't try to rewrite or misinterpret history.
Churlish, butt-hurt Landry was playing hard to pin down. Sir Jerry HAD TO CHASE AFTER OLD AN LANDRY to even speak to him. In another town. On a golf course.
Had Landry had any grace or adult attitude that fateful week, he would have met the future owner in a private, dignified setting AND HANDLED BETTER.
Old man Landry used those words "could have been handled better." Yeah Tom, but Jones was expecting to deal with an adult, not a capricious little girl.

I’ll be honest, as an 18 year old in 1988 who used to live and die by Cowboy games...a loss would destroy my week...I was excited that Landry got fired. Loved him but it got to the point where he was the stubborn old man who was never going to back down so a move had to be made
