I don't think anyone was really upset that Landry got fired. I think pretty much every Cowboys fan knew that it was past time for him to go by 1989. It was always about the way it was handled, and the events prior to him being relieved of his duties, that got fans upset.

Landry was an icon in Dallas. He was the Dallas Cowboys, really. So they expected the firing to be handled tastefully and gracefully. Unfortunately due to circumstances (several of them I'm sure) things didn't pan out that way.

And?

....What does this have to do with Jones firing Landry? And please everyone, spare me the semantics on how Jones didn't "officially" fire an icon of the game.

Schram never said he was going ro fire Tom Landry, he merely had someone in line and Tom Landry changed his mind, he had a right to, he earned that right.

No team, not even the Patriots will repeat what that team did and how they did it.

You dont fire icons, you let them make the call. You respect the guys who invented what we see today and made the NFL what it is. The Shulas, Lombardis, Browns and Landry's have earned it.

Landry was fired ten years after his last NFL championship game in 1978, the last of seven., five years after the Ciwboys last NFC championship game. For the current GM it has been 23 years on both counts.

The hypocrisy is overwhelming.

No doubt about that. If Landry had lost it after 3 losing seasons what does that say about the current regime?

Sounds just like Landry. He knew his time was short yet he was playing mind games, little girls' games. I am thinking of retiring. I am staying. Hackett is not doing it the right way ....
It continued with Sir Jones. Follow me across the state to fire me if you can find me. It wasn't (the firing) done the right way ... When Jimmy took us to the Super Bowl, Landry said he was going to be busy and probably not watch. So capricious. Such a juvenile all of the sudden. What a senile jerk.
I'm not one to live in the past but everything I know about Tom your remarks are below both Landry and I hope you.

Agreed. Correct on all counts. He is revered now, and rightfully so, but at the time he was fired...it was necessary. Just poorly handled.

You've lost a lot. I'm sorry.we are grown men and respect for those who founded what we pleasure is civilized.I misread you and that's my failure.
Vague and metaphysical. Yet, the common touch. I like that, old fellow.

I was a 'Canes fan in my HS years. I thought they played a different, completely arrogant brand of football. But they played faster than any other team in D1 football. The 86 Team that lost to Penn State may have been the most talented college football team of all time.

I knew Jimmy would turn it around and was thrilled when he was brought in. I had cancelled my Dallas Cowboys Weekly subscription I think two seasons prior because the team stunk after Danny White was done. I think the total subscription cost was $24.00 a year.

B.S. to the max.

There were a great deal of fans that stopped being fans strictly due to Landry being fired.

His time was never over in the NFL. To this day half of what you see on the TV was invented by him, the 4-3 defense, passing from the shotgun, pre snap motion etc. Heck, he practically invented gameplanning. Long before there was game analysts like Madden and Gruden, part of the Landry Show was a black and white projector while he explained the plays.

Landry and Schram was going to draft Aikman. They had Irvin and Kelvin Martin. They had half the offensive line. They had Ken Norton, Bill Batea, Jim Jeffcoat and others.

In 1975 they wrote him and the Cowboys off after missing the playoffs in 1974. That following seasin he took a twam with 12 rookies plauying significant roles and took them to the Super Bowl. No reason to think he couldn't do it again.

And his three losing seasons?

7-8 strike season
7-9
3-13 first two QB's, both starting WR's and two O-linemen out for the season.

And that erased 20 consecutive winning seasons, a record that still stands today?

No respect....none..
