Our defense in general has been better than most expected. Our secondary is legit and actually generating a pass rush today will boost confidence for sure.
Actually I expected our defense to play well but was told over and over on this board that I'm blinded by my homer glasses. I give reasons why and it was the same thing. Some of us believed in this defense and made it known all offseason

I'm pretty sure the Bengals offensive line is one of the worst in the league, but Claiborne has certainly been playing well so far this year. I really wonder what finally clicked.
It was considered one of their strengths coming into the season, it is not up their with the Dallas or Tenn OL but it was considered better than avg. I was surprised by the push I do not know if Rod saw something in film but they looked very bad.

We're actually not getting any ROI. Claiborne was a free agent. The only sense that you could consider getting ROI here is that because we drafted him, he has knowledge of our system, but he is not on a rookie contract, there is no ROI here.

Jesus man you gonna turn this into a semantics contest? We spent a high pick on him, you know very well what the OP is saying.

I know exactly what the OP is saying, but this isn't semantics.

It's important to understand how these contracts work. The value of the draft pick is very specific to the rookie contract. While you prefer to sign players that you already know fit your system, and there is real value in that, once a player hits free agency, you can't recover the investment you made into the draft with them. We have that window, and we can't get that back. Whether you pay Norman or you pay Claiborne, it doesn't matter which one you drafted.

Best thing we could have done was switch him to the left side...and have patience with him. That wonderlic score of 7 should have been a red flag that he was a slow learner.

But to his credit.....He's finally starting to get it....and he is a competitor.

Most preseason publications had them ranked 2nd or 3rd best in the NFL.

Maybe it was considered good in the preseason, but the only QB that's been sacked more than Dalton is Andrew Luck. He got sacked 7 times in their season opener alone.

His health would be my guess

Consistent health = quality repetition = preparedness = confident play. Virtuous cycle.

Mo has been outstanding.

The DBs have collectively been better. It's amazing what coaching can do. I've seen more DBs turn to look back for the ball in 5 games than I've seen in 5 seasons combined.

Everyone knows his wonderlic score is a joke because he didn't take the test seriously. Comon' man.

If he had gone to a school like....oh say Boise St. you would be pimping him as Defensive Player Of The Year about now. Probably 24/7.
