I think this team has 7 immediate needs due to age and ineffectiveness. Luckily we have 7 draft picks. I do think we can fill some needs in FA. I am going to rank the needs I speak of in this order. I also believe return game help is always a plus, but I am talking starters on O and D only for now.

1. FS
2. RT
3. DE
4. ILB
5. SS
6. RG
7. CB

Of those 7 positions I think strength of this draft for them is as follows.

1. DE
2. CB
3. RT
4. RG
5. SS
6. FS
7. ILB

If we were to draft a CB in the 1st and move Newman to FS as I have advocated, I think it handles two needs and gives us a luxury pick with one of a our 7 picks.

Trying to fill just these 7 positions I wouldn't mind this Draft.

1. Nick Fairley, DE, Auburn.
2. Martez Wilson, ILB, Illinois
3. Gabe Carimi, RT, Wisconsin
4. Deunta Williams, FS, North Carolina
5. Ahmad Black, SS, Florida
6. Davon House, CB, New Mexico State
7. Andrew Jackson, OG, Fresno State

Have fun.

Wouldn't mind that. Some issues though.

I'd much rather wait until next year to select a ILB, especially that high/ Te'o, Burflict, Hightower, Carder are all coming out next year, and will all be studs.

And Ahmad Black will go much higher then the 5th. Right now I think he's a 3rd rounder. With a good Senior Bowl and combine I think he can go at the top of round 2.

No issues with that though. Especially with Deunta at FS and Black at SS.

if we could pull that off it would be a coup de gras

I don't get it. Ahmad Black will NOT be a SS in the NFL first of all.

Are those numbers supposed to be the round each gets picked in?

Carimi won't last past the first or high second, and Black will be gone by the top of the 3rd.

Doubt Duenta lasts until the 4th either.

I think you flip Carimi and Martez Wilson, as well as Black & Deunta Williams, and those picks could work. Wilson is an athletic freak, but aren't you worried about his broken neck? I am surprised he is coming out myself, he could have used another year in school to push him up into the 1st round. Probably a mid 2nd to mid 3rd right now.

And don't let the mosquitoes bug you about Ahmad Black, he is certainly a SS in the NFL. He has the requisite speed to cover man to man. He is physical against the run. And his lack of height has not been a detriment to other SS like Sanders, Polamalu, Manning et al.

Its not the height that is the problem.. you're close though. ;)

I am guessing the draft you suggested is just for fun to illustrate your main point but very interested to see your assessment.

Bearing in mind that Fairley/Petersen may (alas) not be available and your assesment of strenth of draft versus our needs perhaps the best option would be....

to trade back a little and pick up an extra pick in Rd 2 or 3 then choose OL (2), DE and DB with our first 4 picks??

Bingo.

Of course it all depends on what we do in FA and what value is available when our time comes to pick in the first couple rounds, but with what we know now i'd say that scenario is one of the best that could happen for us.

On paper and based on value, that would probably be the best draft in history.

Picks 2-6 could all possibly go in round two, and Fairley at #9 would be the draft steal of at least the past decade.

Love Davon House, BTW. I expect the kid to kill at the combine and move well into round three, at least.

Martez Wilson.............

I wouldn't be suprised to see Jerry keep on throwing stuff against the wall at RT to see what sticks.

Try young and a mid round pick at RT to see if we can solve it on the cheap.

How about we trade our 1st(9) for 1st(32), 2(49), 2(64) and 3(96).
Then we go to work with 1(32)2(41)2(49)2(64)3(73)3(96)4(105)5(137)6(169)7( 210)

Now you can fill those 7 needs with 7 picks, before 106.

New England? Who do they want at 9 that they'd swap 1sts and give 2 2nds and a 3rd?

I love that scenario because it leaves Peterson, Prince and Quinn on the board at 9. Can we really mess that up?

I'd prefer for one of the QB's to be on the board at 9.

WSH 10, Minny, 12, and Miami 15 all need a QB.

With our history with the Miami guys the may want to jump up to 9 to get ahead of the other guys.

I will never get the(your) infatuation with Peterson. You need to pick Quinn there
