Mock Three Times... On The Ceiling...

Close, but $137.1 million.

yeah, but that doesnt include the tenders that the cowboys issued doug free and others this year best to my knowledge

so thats a little more right?

In terms of salaries for the 2011 season, the Cowboys have committed $137.4 million toward the 2011 salary cap and that doesn't include tenders and rookie salaries.

Jerry Jones has said the Cowboys will continue to have the highest payroll in 2011 regardless of who is released.

I agree with you, what do we gain by drafting a potentially great starter and losing our only decent not great cb? We must sign Newman also or do we sign the Raider FA CB?

I have the same question. In my opinion, drafting Peterson and releasing Newman pretty much concedes you're going to give up a ton of yards through the air this year.

My dream defensive backfield is Newman, Huff, Sensabaugh, and Peterson.

I think Newman will restructure his contract. It's not like he's not going to get paid. Jerry takes care of his guys.

I've been saying for months that Peterson is number 1 on the Cowboys board and if they can get him they will. If they can't then they will either select Tyron Smith at #9 or try to trade down and still take him.

I firmly believe this is exactly what their plans are and I am fine with either option.

I find this hard to believe coming from someone who wants Peterson worse than I want to be in a Jessica Alba/Scarlett Johanson sandwich.

I may have already asked this, but is it possible the Cowboys would use Peterson at FS?

I am not big on Sensabaugh, however I do like your other 3......let's hope we just improve on last year.

By now my agenda is plain as the sun in a cloudless noon sky. I believe the Secondary is the most lacking area on this team. Nearly 320 yards passing per game convinces me of this. This year several teams need to take players who help a special player fall to us.

1. Panthers, Cam Newton. When no dominant player exists, you take a QB.
2. Broncos, Marcel Dareus. They have to fix the DL.
3. Bills, Blaine Gabbart. I hear they want Von Miller, but I don't buy it.
4. Bengals, AJ Green. If the Bills go Miller, they jump at Gabbart. They need QB and WR in the worst way.
5. Cardinals, Von Miller. They have to have a pass rush.

Cowboys trade #9 and #71 to the Browns for #6.

#6. Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU, 6'0", 219. Simply the best fit for Dallas and the best player in this Draft. I believe it is a perfect meeting of talent and opportunity. There will be a Salary cap and unless he re-works his deal Newman is probably gone. This is a must position. Even over OL.

#40. Stefan Wisniewski, OG, Penn State, 6'3", 300. I would love to trade down here and get a 3rd back. I believe the starting 5 OL has a chance of being back in 2011. Not what people want to hear, but I've been telling people to "be prepared." That doesn't mean we won't look to shore up the OL through Free Agency if we can and definitely the Draft. Wis starts in 2012 if he doesn't win the job outright for 2011. He could.

#109. Deunta Williams, FS, North Carolina, 6'2", 200. Either Michel Huff, Brodney Poole, or Daniel Manning will be brought in to work with a re-signed Sensabaugh. Or perhaps he walks and two of them are signed. Either way, Deunta Williams makes great sense to gamble on.

#140. Henry Hynoski, FB, Pittsburgh, 6'2", 255. I believe he could be a difference maker on this team and that is why we should not hesitate at all. Short yardage is a specialty and this guy is a weapon. Top notch blocker and a very serviceable receiver.

#171. DeMarcus Van Dyke, CB, Miami, 6'1", 176.
A blazer who has impressed the Cowboys so far despite his slight frame.

#209. Kristofer O'Dowd, C, USC, 6'5", 305. A nasty player worth a late look for the future.

Nice! Would be very pleased if the draft plays out this way.

Possible, but not probable. Terence Newman is going to be 33 at season's start and has a $10.1 million cap hit. I believe cutting him saves $8 million which is by far the most of any player on the team.

If I am wrong on that Adam can correct me.

The cap in 2009 was $128 million. Right now we sit at $137.1 million and that is without re-signing Free, Kosier, and Sensabaugh or anyone else. We will absolutely cut some fat to create cap room. I don't see how Barber stays. I think they'll cut either Davis or Colombo but I doubt they cut both. Too much change is risky.

I get hooked on players. The last time I was this giddy about a player was Patrick Willis. Where do I lament his being a 49er every day. Prior to that it was Terrell Suggs. I also do not hate Newman because we took him over Suggs.

Yes, I am Patrick Peterson's goofiest fan on this site, but I never become so married to a prospect that I lose my damned mind if we don't get him.

Bunting at NFP has him rated as 25th best player available, questionable he lasts this long. Intriguing though, Packers got alot of big plays last year from their FB.

Our current payroll concerns me. I just can't see the FA signings some here have called for.

Fairly certain Newman would offer little 2011 cap savings. He still has a significant pro-rated bonus that would be excellerated into 2011 if released.
But much like Williams and Barber, his release would save a ton starting in 2012.
And that's really how you have to look at it. The total savings over the 2-4 years after the player's release.

I want to keep Newman. I believe he's still a good player and unless we trade up for Peterson, his release makes little sense to me.

Williams and Barber are another deal. If you look at the roles they will fill in a best case scenario, you're talking about a $2mil player.
They need to go and the savings we'd realized in 2012 and on, are what's need to re-up Free, Koiser and Sensabaugh.

But in the end, trading down simply helps on too many levels not to be our best play.

If we gain even two extra selctions in the top 100, that would have to be worth moving down to the 18-20 range. I'd even be in favor of an 2nd move down to the 23-28 range for another pick in the top 100.

So long as we're still in position to take a RT we believe will start day one.

Just imagine taking a RT we feel real good about at 26 and then having four selections in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

That would go a long way toward possibly filling other needs in the OL and secondary while helping keep the payroll in check.

Fullbacks generally go in the 4th to 6th round. Only fullback taken really high was the alstodt kid, or however you spell his name that played for tampabay.

 And if you remember, we drafted our great fullback the Moose in 89 in 2nd round, but the top fullbacks now, are suppose to go anywhere from 4th to 6th round because fullbacks are slowly being phased out or you cant find them.

NO! No! You dont trade down that far, sure if you cant get peterson, but if you think you can get either Cameron Jordan or J J Watt or Tyron Smith anywhere from 12th to 17th pick, then possibly consider that.

The Cowboys history of drafting players 18th or further down generally hasnt been good in the NFL draft.
Robert Jones 92 24th in 1st round
Shante Carver 94 draft, 23rd in 1st rd
David Lafleur 97 draft, 22nd in 1st rd
Bobby Carpenter 06 draft, 18th in 1st rd
Anthony Spencer 07 draft, 26th in 1st rd
felix jones 08-22nd, mike jenkins 25th in 1st rd, jury still out on them

The Cowboys drafting 18th or futher down in Jerry Jones era hasnt been good in 1st round.

Do you really believe past failed selections in the 1990's should dictate our current draft strategy?

BTW- none of those picks were a RT.

I want us to draft our next starting RT with our 1st selection in round 1. As a rule of thumb, I'm not big on using premium selctions to fill certain roles on a team. RT is one of those.

There are a number of quality RTs other than Smith expected to go between 15 and 32.

OMT If you don't believe the Cowboys can select quality players between picks 15 and 64, then what's the point? We're doomed anyway you look at it.

As much as we do not agree on Cowboy fandom philosophies and message board etiquette, I always agree with/like your mocks. This is another good one.

If we landed Peterson, first I would dance and then I would hope we could trade Newman to a team in need of a veteran starting CB (Ravens/Jets) rather than cut him. Before anyone says no team will trade for that contract, please remember that barring any major CBA changes, the new team can and usually does rip up the old contract and sign the player to a new deal (with a signing bonus).

Wisniewski and O'Dowd would be great additions. I'm as big a Deunta Williams fan as you are so I'd be thrilled with him. The Pitt fullback is solid and Van Dyke has potential. Again, very good mock.

My problem with trading up for Patrick Peterson or anyone is, I'm almost certain we could get a 3rd rounder by trading down, and still get one of our targeted players (Cam Jordan, JJ Watt, Tyron Smith). So to me the actual cost of trading up for Peterson is our 3rd (I don't think a 4th gets it done) and the 3rd (possibly 2nd) we could've gotten.

Even if Peterson fell to us, I would trade out of the pick for a second rounder, if a team like Houston was desperate for him.

Why do so many love Stefan Wisniewski. I have seen him get owned three times this year. Florida and Alabama made him look like a high school player and HE couldn't anchor vs Iowa.

Sorry but he doesn't have the strength to play on dallas OL. Not the scheme they us.

If he does, I'll have to take a second to laugh at him... that rating is RIDICULOUS...

Bluntly, I've read a lot of Bunting's work this offseason, and I don't trust his ratings at all... I like his ability to evaluate prospects' abilities, but I get the strong sense that the criteria for his rating players is his personal, subjective opinion...

This is a classic example-- Wes has Hynoski rated 25th, NFL Draft Scout (my favorite "draft gurus") have him rated 195th... simply put, I have a strong hunch that Hynoski will get drafted a lot closer to where NFLDS has him (the 6th round) than where Bunting does (late 1st round)... in fact, I'd call it a major upset if anybody spent a pick on him before the 5th round...

This is especially true if he doesn't improve on that dreadfully slow 5.06 490 he posted at the combine... the Boys want their fullback to be a threat swinging out of the backfield as a safety valve on passing downs, and if Hynoski is really that slow (it's always possible that he was less than 100 per cent that day), even if he does catch the ball he won't be able to do anything with it...

Going into this offseason process, I was high on both Hynoski and Marecic, but after seeing their workout numbers, I have serious doubts whether they have the quickness to succeed at the next level... if you just want somebody who blocks, and offers nothing else, perhaps you could go with them, but like I said, the Boys want their fullbacks to be a factor in the passing game, too...

This might be the year to get your fullback in free agency, with Ahmard Hall from the Titans and the kid from Minnesota (can't remember his name right now) hitting the open market... either one is, IMO, superior to any FB in this draft...

Mark Stepnoski didn't have the size or strength either.

would not surprise Carolina with with Dareuos

hold it Hos your saying When no dominant player exists, you take a QB

so your saying Dareous and Petersen are not dominant players

but yet you say "is the best player in this Draft"

and with Rivera - being a defensive minded guy I could see him picking either guy

then you John Fox and Denver I don't see how either guy gets past those two teams

Gotta say, Wisniewski may have better blood lines, but Moffitt is the better guard (maybe even better at center too). Throw out the measurables & upside stuff, Moffitt is the better football player right now.

And I am shocked how far O'Dowd has dropped since your first mocks. The guy has gone from a mid round pick to bottom of the draft-UDFA status.
