Moore: Cowboys offense is indeed too Romo-friendly; Danny White explains what needs fixing

http://sportsday.***BANNED-URL***/d...mo-friendly-danny-white-explains-needs-fixing

Put a frog in boiling water and it will jump out.

Put that same frog in cold water and gradually turn up the heat, and it will sit in that pot until it boils to death.

Danny White cites this anecdote when giving his opinion on the Cowboys' plight in Tony Romo's absence.

"That has happened to this offense, I think, over the course of six or eight years,'' the former Cowboys quarterback said. "The thing that Tony does better than anyone in the league, in my opinion, is improvise. But it's become a crutch.

"It's become their offense.''

The phrase "Romo-friendly'' has become part of Cowboys vernacular in recent years. But in tailoring the offense to fit the skills of No. 9, have the Cowboys made it so specific that backups have little room to operate? Have coaches and players put so much faith in Romo's ability to bail them out that it has stripped this offense of the timing routes and blitz pickups that are essential tools of success for the majority of quarterbacks?

Owner Jerry Jones, executive vice president Stephen Jones and head coach Jason Garrett have discussed this topic in the wake of a 4-12 season. Those conversations continue.

These three, along with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, must determine if the issue is the scheme or the players they have selected to fill-in behind Romo.

"Those are the things we'll be going over,'' Stephen Jones said...

Just draft a future QB, let him learn a few years. But do not expect him to be a Tony, just let him learn the NFL / QB position in general. adjust the offense as needed for when he takes over...oh, wait, this offense doesn't make adjustments....
They better learn, as this last season showed that more so than ever. It's the only way this team can move forward and not be predictable.

:hammer:Finally someone gets it.
My only other problem is that can JG change the offense to abide a new, young, fresh, talented QB from the draft or will he need another "improviser" like Tony to replace Tony to run his offense?

How come everyone in the known universe can see this but Jerry and Jason can't?

Jerry has too much JWB, and puts his hands over Jason's eyes in the draft room, and says, pick a number...just a guess, but wouldn't rule it out....

Seems white would make a decent qb coach. I see him selling home security on tv now. One of my favorite players and underrated overall as a qb I think. That year he got hurt the team was rolling

I think a strength of Jerry Jones the owner is that he's loyal to his players. And that quality is valuable when you need to keep a team together.

I think a weakness of Jerry Jones the GM is that he's loyal to his players. And that quality is restrictive when you have to let players go or you have to bring in new players to compete with your stars.

Maybe this is a shallow observation, but it seems to me when Jerry likes a player, he's not willing to challenge that player with another who can take his place, or he tends to ride with that player until the player can't play anymore. Examples?

1. Drafting the likes of Derrick Lassic, Sherman Williams, etc.., as "backups" to Emmitt Smith. Our strategy in the 90s post-Johnson was not to pick players who could compete with the stars but to sign backups. It's almost as if we were scared to provide competition for Aikman for Emmitt, etc. Not that any of the guys we picked or acquired via free agency would have taken their spot, but the mentality of not wanting to challenge players can be crippling for a franchise.

2. Holding to Aikman for too long. I said after the 97-98 season that the Cowboys need to start looking for Aikman's replacement or even, gasp, trade him. It looked to me like Aikman's play was declining, and it was time to move on. But Jerry thought Aikman (and the roster) had one more Super Bowl run in them. And year after year, that was the mindset until Aikman was forced to retire. We should have been looking for his replacement in 97.

3. Romo. One of the reasons I believe we haven't start looking for a backup to Romo is because we don't want to "offend" him or create an issue where there's a quarterback controversy. The general media want to start such a controversy because the narrative of "Romo can't win the big one" is out there. And rather than feed that, Jerry avoids it all together by not bringing a guy in to challenge Romo. But ... you have to bring competition to your squad and your starting quarterback. Look at what Green Bay did with Rodgers even though Favre was still playing. Look at what San Francisco did in bringing in Young when Montana still had another Super Bowl ring to win. Yes, there was tension as the conflicts between Favre-Rodgers and Montana-Young were well documented. But look at the results: The Packers and the 49ers won Super Bowls with all their quarterbacks.

I sure hope we don't "spare" Romo's feelings by not drafting one of the top three quarterbacks (assuming we rate them that high) if they're available.

And, yes, I understand Jerry wanted Manziel. But I really don't believe Manziel was ever in consideration, despite what Jerry says. If he was their top-rated player, they would have taken him. He wasn't. Nor was he on the top board of most teams otherwise, he would have been taken in the draft. Manziel had to call the Browns and beg them to take him, based on some reports.

He probably would but I suspect that Danny White is done with coaching. He was a HC in the AFL for years, won a couple of Championships in the AFL and I believe he is now out of coaching for good. He probably would have been a really good Coach in the NFL, had he gotten the chance.

My thoughts exactly, Are our coaching team able to translate the Romo friendly scheme to other QBs not named Romo?

Evidence so far is not encouraging. Perhaps that's why they are interested in a QB that extends plays, e. g. JFF or RG3?

I hope the strategy doesn't include any of the above

I happen to agree with Danny White here and have believed that we are too dependent on Tony for awhile now but so what? I mean, it's not like everybody and their Brother can't see this. Every team in the League sees this. That's why everybody focus is all around Tony and what you can do to disrupt him. That's also why you see Tony have 3 INT games every once in a while. When DCs get it right, Tony and the team look horrible because everything is tied so closely to Tony on Offense.

It is a problem but it's also a problem that we are not going to fix until we have to move on from Tony. A few seasons ago, I had endless discussions over the wisdom of this approach, especially around the time we were re-signing Tony. The amount of money we have invested in Tony basically dictates that we follow the path here. We can't get off of it and we can't fix it. Tony is here for as long as he wants to be and the financial commitment is such that we can not afford to go away from Tony, even if we wanted to. This is what we are. Get used to it.

:hammer:it by Danny White.
There is a complete lack of timing routes. I don't remember seeing many of this type of route run this year.
Easy example - Aikman to Irvine for 10 yards. Ball was out of hand before the receiver turned around.

You see, this is good reporting. You find an expert and work to eliminate anonymity and let the expert express their thoughts on an important subject.

Great job Mr. Moore. I applaud you.

You mean better than having Skip Bayless rant as he sprays spittle all over the camera lens?

HEY!

Lets not be too harsh on spittle used as an effective alternative to Windex as a cleaning solution. If you view it in those terms, you might make the argument that Bayless is somewhat of a renaissance man.

I think this was the end of the spittle era.

Ahh, Danny, my top 3 favorite Cowboys of all time. And as he said he's not a casual observer. I trust him way more then Babe, etc.

If this coaching staff doesn't change, and Romo goes down again we're doomed.
