Moore: Cowboys offense is indeed too Romo-friendly; Danny White explains what needs fixing

http://sportsday.***BANNED-URL***/d...mo-friendly-danny-white-explains-needs-fixing

Put a frog in boiling water and it will jump out.

Put that same frog in cold water and gradually turn up the heat, and it will sit in that pot until it boils to death.

Danny White cites this anecdote when giving his opinion on the Cowboys' plight in Tony Romo's absence.

"That has happened to this offense, I think, over the course of six or eight years,'' the former Cowboys quarterback said. "The thing that Tony does better than anyone in the league, in my opinion, is improvise. But it's become a crutch.

"It's become their offense.''

The phrase "Romo-friendly'' has become part of Cowboys vernacular in recent years. But in tailoring the offense to fit the skills of No. 9, have the Cowboys made it so specific that backups have little room to operate? Have coaches and players put so much faith in Romo's ability to bail them out that it has stripped this offense of the timing routes and blitz pickups that are essential tools of success for the majority of quarterbacks?

Owner Jerry Jones, executive vice president Stephen Jones and head coach Jason Garrett have discussed this topic in the wake of a 4-12 season. Those conversations continue.

These three, along with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, must determine if the issue is the scheme or the players they have selected to fill-in behind Romo.

"Those are the things we'll be going over,'' Stephen Jones said...

Danny, working on the assumption that you have some free time, we have on the Dallas cowboys, a . . . um . . . static coach. Wouldn't it be nice if you were HC instead of whatshisname?

Of course, you are totally correct about our offense. It is made in the image of Tony Romo, walk-on from Eastern Illinois who went on to climb the heights of the NFL with 2 career playoff wins (as opposed to White's 5-5 playoffs record) and lots of moral wins.
Well, just a thought, mate.

I actually disagree with this assessment. Watching this year, there were 2-3 times a game where I thought it was obvious where the open WR was going to be based on pre-snap. I'm not a football genius or capable of being an NFL QB, but I watch a ton of football and the Cowboys. Then Weeden or Cassel just wouldn't look that way. Maybe it was the read, maybe it was the TV coverage, I dunno. Obviously hurt WRs created an issue as well. But I think it's just as clear that Weeden and Cassell are really not good QBs.

I don't think Jerry has missed this point at all. He's made numerous comments about adjustments and the "Romo-friendliness" of the offense being an issue. Now Jason on the other hand.....

Just draft a future QB, let him learn a few years. But do not expect him to be a Tony, just let him learn the NFL / QB position in general. adjust the offense as needed for when he takes over..

That's the thing...this coaching staff hasn't proved they know how to adjust.

This quote insinuates that JG and offensive staff haven't been doing their jobs..correct? Why would that have to be "looked at going forward" when the results were on full display last season with an anemic offense that lacked both innovation of any kind from the coaching staff and the lack of execution on behalf of the players, which you hear JG speak to so proudly as a scapegoat for lack of offensive production. "Well if they just executed..." yada yada How could they? That has been Romo's unofficial title (HC/OC) throughout JG's tenure as was disturbingly confirmed this last season. White is saying that execution has become secondary due to coaches relying on Romo to bail them out with such dated schemes and lack of influence coaches have via TC and practices (execution is bread here).

Only part I question is whether they really need to change the offense while Tony is running it.

I look at Carolina. They have a QB who's the complete opposite of his backup, and the situation is very similar. Cam also improvises in his own way, and he also doesn't make many of the quick reads/throws that White mentions. However, when the old man Derek Anderson has had to start, they've been productive even though he obviously has to run the offense in a completely different way.

Why is this Coaching staff incapable of changing the playbook to utilize our players strengths, and take advantage of our opponents weaknesses???

Once Romo went down, the playbook should have been tailored to the backup QB's strengths. I'm no football guy, but I have heard enough football talk to know that is a basic concept.

After Brady goes down in 2008, Bill Belichick goes 10-5 with Matt Cassel. There is no excuse for the horrible Coaching job here this season....and there lays the problem, there are too many excuses around here with very little winning results!

If there really are no hot reads in this offense and Tony is supposed to eat the hit each time a blitz comes through, we can expect more broken bones in the future. He's not getting any younger.

I don't live in Texas. Is that a local channel you see him on?

Yeah, I don't remember the name of it even, it's kind of like a mini infomercial, some chick interviewing him and how he had the security of an oline when he played, and you need one too. Corny as hell.ha

"Ninety-five percent of coaches are doing the same thing,'' Romo said. "It's just a matter of players going out and executing and doing things faster, doing things better."

I like Romo but what he said above doesn't make sense. It's hard for a backup QB to do things faster and things better until he gets playing time in real games.

The better answer is to change the scheme so that someone who can't play as fast as Romo can have some success. Better route combination to help the receivers get open quicker would be a good start.

That's a good point.

And to some extent I do think some tweaks need to be made.

Quite frankly the offense didn't look sharp the beginning of the season when Romo was healthy.

Secondly how often have we seen teams blitz the Cowboys and all the receivers go long... it happens far more often than it should.

I agree with that. Route combinations aren't talked about enough.

Like I just posted... how often do we see all-out blitzes and all the Cowboy receivers go long?

A couple big differences between the 2008 Pats and the 2015 Cowboys...

Cassell had full seasons from Randy Moss and Wes Welker, who combined for 180 receptions. Weeden, Cassell and Moore... well we know what they had to work with.

Secondly the Pats were +1 in turnover differential as opposed to -22.

Yeah coaching is some of it, but only some if it.

I think the better analysis is that the offense is crap, as seen with the 3 different bkups one who won 2 games at houston.
and Romo just improvises a lot and makes it work!
It isnt Romo friendly , just the opposite, it holds tony back, and has for years.
He is just good enough t make it work at times, unless the other defense is really good and then even tony will struggle.

Now imagine tony with a actual good & innovative play book and offense! He would already have a ring or 2.

So you have a crap offense and tony is good enough and makes enough plays to make it seem like a ok offense but it isnt.

Basically tony has had his reins pulled back for years by this stale JG offense.
Opposing teams an their DC's love it though.

Now the 3 40 year old brains are looking at it, so no telling what they come up with.
