More likely to happen: Dak gets an extension or Dak gets benched?

I like Dakota but every now and then he has a stinker of a game he could have run for a touchdown yesterday and a couple of first downs as well got to run when it is there.

This game will have no effect on Dak's future. None. Zero. Zilch. He threw an INT late in the game when the game was a long shot.

This was a team loss, including the coaches. Let's hope the 3 offensive linemen can play next week after getting this week off. It looked to me like Tyron was stalking the sidelines like he could play, and wanted to play. So clearly they held him out thinking they didn't need him. I have a feeling Martin could have played too. The Cowboys have always been overly cautious when it comes to injuries. Yesterday that may have cost them a game.

Maybe because the 2 on the roster have less than a year of experience as starters.

Rush: 5 starts (4 Wins - 1 Losses)
Lance: 4 starts (2 Wins - 2 Losses)
We've seen enough of Rush to know he's not better than Dak.

Now Lance? Who the heck knows. Big time talent but he looked lost in San Fran (and they have a better coaching staff than we do).

Extension is virtually assured, we’re just waiting to hear the compensation that they’ve gotten both sides to agree to

Extension. Watching the talk shows this morning. Dak is by far the most scrutinized quarterback. They actually have a segment grading his performance. No other quarterback is getting that type of coverage. Did anyone see Lawrence or Lamar yesterday   .

I still think it has a whole lot more to do with how Lance looks in practice as the year goes on. If he shows something to this staff I think the Cowboys passing up on the Dak extension could be possible. If Lance shows you nothing though you're basically stuck with Dak no matter what. Despite some clunkers sometimes hes still by far the best option this team has unless they want to punt on 2024 and go after a QB in the draft, and give him a developmental year.

You're never stuck with a player unless you choose to be. We have Dak under contract next year right, draft a QB next season (move up if necessary like the Chiefs did with Mahomes) let him sit behind Dak for a season. If he sucks move on from Dak and find a QB in free agency or trade.

If I am Jerry I am waiting until we see how this season goes. This is the best team on paper we have had in years, and if Dak fails to captain the ship how on earth can we continue to let him lead? There should be 245 qb's available in free agency in the off season that can mentro Lance for another year and see what, if anything, we have. This franchise cannot continue to move forward without our QB being capable. So far in 3 games.....well you know. Problem is how we eat that mammoth 1 year left on his contract thingy next season

Fait accompli -- (Fr) a thing already done; an accomplished fact.
as in, owners extending a player contract terms
as we watch it happen

Jerry is a fool but the fact that he acquired Lance is perplexing. I truly believe, despite him being an emergency QB, that Jerry brought him here for a Jordan Love type experiment. Let him grow while not being a starter. Then, when the starter QB gets benched/isn’t resigned, he takes over and shows us what he’s made of. I truly believe if Dak continues this level of play, Jerry will order for him to be benched and for him to elevate Lance to show us what he’s got. From there on out, we’ll know whether to develop Lance or draft a QB.

The restructuring of the contract over the last couple of years makes it all but certain he will get an extension. From my understanding, if cut the remainder of the contract could be spread over the remainder including the two voided years however that is a long time to keep a cap number on the books especially without the player being here. My guess though is the new extension will have voided years as well to continue with the restructures however eventually you will need to pay the piper and the money will need to be paid out. Hopefully by then you have a young QB that you are developing that will have a low cap number that will help absorb the money left over that we would still be paying Dak.

Possibly, just depends on what is there for the taking. I'm all for the idea that if there is a QB you love do whatever you need to do to go grab that player, but 1st round QB bust rates are still pretty high. I don't think you can afford to keep Dak for 1 year while a rookie QB develops because without a new deal Dak is $60M in cap hits for next season. Free agency I don't think is a realistic option just because of the cap hits you take from Dak the next the next couple years if you release/trade him. You simply wont have the money to go grab a Derek Carr type if one becomes available because in addition to the $30-40MM you need to pay that qb you'd have Dak still eating $25-35M in cap space.

You're mostly right, but that young developing QB could be Trey Lance. The only issue there is he doesn't have long to develop. In theory he has one more cheap season then would require an extension, but you could back load a Trey Lance extension to make it work. Not saying it will happen that way, but it is possible.

Dak would have to have the same fate as Romo to get benched for good.

No, I'm not wishing it on him, just seems like once the FO likes a player, it takes an injury and/or painfully obvious showings of decline to move on.

I'm afraid the extension is coming regardless of how he plays.
Of course you extend Dak. I would think a nice long 10 year fully guaranteed ($50 mil/year) should do it. He’s got the fourth most wins since 2016 (only behind Brady, Rodgers, and Mahomes). He has TWO more than Kirk Cousins and NINE more than Goff. His total QBR was top five in 2016, 2017, and 2019 so he’s been a top five QB basically half his career (I don’t want to talk about the other years). He’s thrown for the 8th most TD passes since 2016 (3 more than Derek Carr and 9 more than Goff—he’s only 45 TDs less than Kirk Cousins in 15 less games which he could easily throw for had he played). He’s also ranked in the top ten QB’s by most media people which means he’s a top ten player and correlates to postseason success from a QB perspective. He’s a high character guy that does not show up drunk to games. He remembers to wear the correct uniform EVERY SINGLE game. I rest my case.

You cannot find QB’s in the draft that can start in this league unless the team gets lucky. All the QB’s drafted high that fail had fantastic running games and offensive lines and hall of fame coaching (that’s how you know that drafting QB’s in the draft is a crapshoot-every one of those QB’s were on awesome teams and held their teams back). Only Dak had to suffer through the inept Garrett seasons with no running game and zero defense. He’s had to pull this wreck of a team on his own for years and years.

Brock Purdy is just a gem drafted late. It has nothing to do with the rest of that team. He’s just really good. When you have a top ten QB that has a team that can get into the playoffs—-I mean that drags his terrible team into the playoffs pretty routinely—-you pay them the going rate like Minnesota does with Cousins (till their legs fall off).
