I really can't understand all negativity toward team. When Romo and Dez went out with injuries my initial thought was they wouldn't win another game until they both returned. I wasn't far off. This team is build around Romo/Dez and their contracts say so. So why am I ecstatic about this off-season and next year. Here is why:

1. This is worst I have ever seen NFC east and I don't see it changing much. Philly will be drafting too late to land a legit franchise QB. Chip Kelley offensive philosophy keeps his defenses on field too much and they wear down at end of each season (they gave up an avg of 36 points game in last 6 weeks). The Giants are dysfunctional team with one impact player. They are due for wholesale changes. The Commanders are probably Dallas only real competition but don't have OL or RB to be formidable in playoffs. Most NFL experts I have read all agreed Dallas would have wrapped this division up early if healthy and probably make push deep into playoffs.

2. Draft slot. Currently slotted at #4 (worst case scenario is them dropping to #7). Either way they are getting potential impact player. Go ahead and look back at last 3-4 drafts and look at names in top 7. There are franchise players in there. One thing we know is Dallas is unusually good at drafting in 1st round. Dallas will be picking early each round. Lets add on supplemental picks (I think Dallas will get three #4s added). That would give Dallas 7 draft picks in top 136 players. That's insane influx of talent for already contending team.

3. Salary cap. Take look at Dallas for 2016: http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/dallas-cowboys/. Hopefully you saw what I saw....there is minimal dead money hits in 2016. Usually we see multiple players with millions of dollars in dead money. Jasper Brinkley heads the list at measly 625k. That tells me Cowboys cap is finally cleaned out and running efficient. Now of course Carr cap hit looks awful but I would bite bullet and just keep him one more year. Dallas can redo Tyron Smith and Dez contracts. 2016 Cap is projected at $154M. Dallas could easily get down to about $130M if pressed. In other words, they will have money to sign CB, LB and 2nd tier DE (if Hardy signs elsewhere).

This year was mulligan and they got a gift of drafting where usually worst teams in football rub elbows.

We are in trouble. Sorry.

Trade down and land RB Derrick Henry and WR Michael Thomas, then I'll be more optimistic than yesterday.

Don't forget the fact that Sean Lee finally made it back and played in a career best 15 of 16 games, and he still played like the same old badass Sean Lee... I think there's reason to be cautiously optimistic about Lee moving forward.

Plus the development of Jones, Gregory, and Collins.

We had an outstanding draft last year, and our position in the upcoming draft just gives us more to build with.

Good thread.

Your rightBoys, Last year was a heist while other teams looked around dumfounded.
This coming draft will be two top 36 picks.Plus the rest of the 15 daft will have matured
a year.We have to build up that offense and figure out the offensive play calling which I
admit is a mystery.

three #4s added? thats not right for as I know we'll get a 4 an 3 +6's

anyway I agree. This is not a stay down team nor is the head coach
regardless of the forlorn feel. There's gold in them thar hills

The only reason we're competitive is that our division sucks so yea we'll be able to compete next year if Romo can stay healthy.

That right there is why there is a lot of negativity toward this team by the fans. Many fans thought that the roster was sufficiently good that we could win a couple of games to keep us in the race this year, especially considering how bad the NFC East is. After all, the fans have been told that all of those 8-8 seasons were the growing pains of building the roster and that is why the team did not have as much success early on as other teams with new coaches.

Now the fans are told that there really was no roster building because there is so little depth and talent on the roster that without Romo we are one of the 4 worst teams in the NFL and fans are like, "what the hell have we been doing these past 5 years?" The entire offensive system can only operate if we have a healthy and available Romo? And if we don't have Romo, we cant even score a single TD in 4 dam games this year?

The bottom line was that this didn't just happen by accident, there were major botches made by the front office and this coaching staff that contributed to the demise of this season. And especially when you look around and see teams like the Texans who have started 4 different QBs themselves this year, go out and win their division and we cant even score a TD with our backups........something is very wrong here and I really don't know how anybody can be more optimistic than ever that the problems are going to be fixed when its the same guys that botched the whole situation to begin with.

Just saying.

Those 8-8 seasons were the result of having historic injury problems on defense.
