Memphis-born actor Morgan Freeman was hospitalized at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis in serious condition today after a late-night car accident near his home in Mississippi.
A woman in the car with Freeman, Demaris Meyer, 48, of Memphis, was also injured in the one-car crash.

There was no information on her condition, although both were conscious at the scene.
The wreck occurred in rural Tallahatchie County, about 90 miles south of Memphis.
Freeman, 71, was driving Meyer’s 1997 Nissan Maxima eastbound on Miss. 32 at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday when the car left the road and flipped several times, said Sgt. Ben Williams of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
“He just told them he ran off the road,” said Williams.
Rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to extricate the victims, a task that was made easier because the car landed upright, Williams said.
Freeman and Meyer were both wearing seatbelts.
Bill Luckett, a business partner of Freeman’s in the Ground Zero Blues Club chain, said the actor suffered a broken arm and some other injuries.
Luckett, who was with Freeman at the hospital today, said the actor needed surgery but would be OK.
A former law enforcement officer who lives on Miss. 32, saw the car flip.
“I was watching TV, and I heard the skid,” said Bill Rogers, 53. “I looked out the window and saw the car flipping head over end.”
The car landed in a ditch.
Rogers rushed out, shined a flashlight inside and saw both occupants unconscious.
He went back to his house and called 911.
When he returned Freeman and Meyer were conscious, but the doors were pinned shut.
The trunk was open. Herbs, spices, “lots of recipes” and garden tools were strewn everywhere.
Rescuers at the scene recognized the Oscar-winning actor immediately.
“We’re used to seeing Mr. Freeman around here,” said Rogers. “We all know him.”
Miss. 32 is a two-lane road with very narrow shoulders where the crash occurred, and Rogers said the road was slick from a rain that afternoon.
There was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved, Williams said.
In a prepared statement, Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton paid tribute to the Memphis native.
“Even though he is a world-renowned figure, Morgan Freeman is still one of us, a Memphian at heart and a vital member of this community. Our prayers are with him as he recovers.”
Freeman currently stars as Lucius Fox in the latest Batman movie “The Dark Knight,” which was the top-grossing film at the box office nationwide for the third straight week. Freeman won an Oscar for his supporting role in 2004’s “Million Dollar Baby.”
Earlier this year, Freeman opened a Ground Zero Blues Club on Lt. George W. Lee Avenue in Memphis next to the Westin Downtown.
