Just heard them say that yesterday Wade went into a team meeting and had the players sign an agreement that they would not get any more "after the play" penalties. Referring to the End of the 1st half NYFG game and the Bradie James penalty. Siad that Wade was royally POed. Dropped the agreement on the players, and said to the effect "Don't sign it if you don't mean it", turned and walked out of the room.

Seems Wade is tired of being portrayed as a non-disciplinary Coach.

I think that's a great idea...

Those personal fouls cost not only the team, but coaches and fans as well...

Phillips Asks Players to Sign Penalty Pledge

November 14, 2007 7:46 PM

Upset about his team's three post-play penalties against the Giants on Sunday, Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips took an unusual but entertaining approach to make sure it doesn't happen again.

According to sources, the normally laidback Phillips scolded his players for a couple of minutes and then distributed copies of a statement that read: "I will not hurt my team by giving away post-play penalties."

A red-faced Phillips told players they weren't required to sign the pledge, but I'm told everyone in the room, including coaches, provided signatures.

"He talked for a couple of minutes, and then he got out of there fast," said one player. "He didn't yell, but he obviously wasn't pleased."

The Cowboys coach was particularly upset with linebacker Kevin Burnett for drawing a taunting penalty late in the first half that helped set up a game-tying 40-yard field goal by Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes.

Asked about the dead-ball fouls Monday, Phillips told local reporters, "We will address it. That's not acceptable because we are accountable. It's not for me, it's for their teammates. It cost us some points in that game. We had several of them; I'm not happy about that. I will tell them, and I think they will respond."

Phillips has been criticized in the past for not showing enough emotion, but he launched into a tirade during training camp when several players arrived late for practice.

Linebacker Bradie James and special teams standout Keith Davis had the other post-play penalties Sunday. The Cowboys ended up with 10 penalties in their 31-20 victory over the Giants.

Said another player: "Wade takes this stuff personally, and he thinks it's a poor reflection on him. I don't blame him for being upset."

It's interesting that Phillips' pledge drive came in the wake of former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson lambasting the club for its lack of discipline on FOX's halftime show Sunday.

I know you guys can't seem to get enough Cowboys news, so we'll try to keep it coming. Thanks for your continued support.

Wade gives them a talk and asks them to sign a pledge. Jimmy doesn't say a word, just purses his lips on the sideline and the next day Curvin Richards gets his walking papers. I think you saw how Jimmy would react on Fox. Watch the "America's Game" videos of the 1992 Cowboys and remember what Michael Irvin said about Jimmy Johnson. "He made it so uncomfortable that you didn't want to lose."

Wade is concerned it reflects poorly on him. Jimmy is mad as all get out because he can't stand losing games.

I believe that Wade Phillips has done a good job this year. I don't perceive the Cowboys to be an undisciplined team. In fact, I was surprised after the Giants game to even hear that mentioned.

I do think, however, that you can try to be a "players coach" to a fault. The Cowboys won a SB with Switzer one year, so I'm not saying it won't happen with Wade. I hope it does. I will say, I prefer Jimmy's approach to Wade's. Fear wins more football games than friendship does over the long haul. In a lot of things in life it doesn't, but in football, I think it does. For fear to work, however, you have to be a proven winner (which Johnson was) and you have to have your team's respect.

It could be that he's concerned he comes across as too undisciplined as a coach.

Or it could be he's passive aggressive and it finally builds up to a point where he can't take it any more and he gets ticked off about it.

I agree that the HC needs the respect of his players, how you go about getting that respect will vary from coach to coach. There is no one way to coach.

As far as how Jimmy would have handled it? who knows he did not cut Leon Lett after his bonehead play vs Miami heck he told Leon as long as I'm the HC you will have spot on this team.

Jimmy did not treat all situations the same so how would he have handled Burnett? Who knows? We know what he said in the studio but Jimmy would deal with players based on his knowledge of the player. Some guys need a kick in the butt to get them going other player would go into a shell if treated the same way.

So what does signing the paper do?
It may be largely symbolic, but if the players get the message, who cares if you or I approve of the method?

I agree that Jimmy handled each situation differently, but Jimmy didn't give ANYONE a free pass.

They left Michael Irvin at the airport when he was late to their flight to Detroit in 1992.

He left Aikman when he was late for their team bus after the NFC Championship victory over the 49ers in 1992.

After their loss in Washington, late 1992, he was in the face of Michael Irvin, and Kenny Norton on the plane.

Emmitt Smith said that Jimmy got on him just like all the others.

So, I agree that Jimmy wasn't going to do something to hurt his football team (cutting Leon Lett), but he didn't deal softly with anyone as far as I can tell, and as far as the players recount it.

I agree but as I said we don't know what Jimmy would have done or not because he does not know these players. Sitting at the studio coaching is different than what takes place in that locker room. Right now Wade Phillips is doing a damn good job in his own right. He knows his guys and he has been getting the most out of these players. I'm sure if Jimmy was coaching and someone at the studio said this is how I would do it Jimmy would tell that guy to take a hike.

I agree with you. And as I said, I don't think our team is undisciplined at this point, and I think Wade has done a great job. How can anyone complain at 8-1?

One thing I always knew about Jimmy is the guy was a master motivator. He knew which buttons to push on all of his players. Jimmy was not a master of the X's and O's he delegated that to his assistant coaches but when it came to getting his team ready Jimmy could do that as well as any coach out there.

Wade Phillips had his little talk about being accountable to your teammates.
Three days later Andy Thorn was tardy.
The very next day he was cut.

Phillips will cut people if he has to, but in today's salary cap it's a little more difficult. I like that he gave everyone the choice to sign the paper. Now the team can hold them accountable.

I'll never forget when we came out unprepared against the 49ers in the 1994 Championship game. Interception, fumble, fumble, and we are down 21-0. I can remember, distinctly, thinking, "No way this happens if Jimmy is still here."

And you know what, that would normally have been speculation, but in Jimmy's case it wasn't. There is no way in the world that Jimmy Johnson would not have THAT TEAM prepared to play SF on the road for a 3 peat.

I always felt a bit sorry for Switzer, kind of inherited a no win situation, but there is no doubt that the team's discipline took a severe hit under him.

No doubt Wade gets hacked just like any other person. He may not rant and rave but he will get his point across and he will cut a player like any other HC.

sad part is it shouldn't come to this really like Coakleysdad says, Elite teams dont commit these stupid penalties,

my take is our team is still Young, young players make stupid mistakes, Cowboys have a lot of years to grow into a dominance force in the NFL (not that we are doing that now) but we are a young team, there's some growing up to do, we can all see that

from stupid penalties that we got in our last game, I hope this hits home with the players that Wade is not gonna sit back and hear people talk about how

relaxed he is, good job wade..

What wasn't reported was that he also made Burnett write "I will not taunt idiots" on the white board 100 times.

He also sent a note home to Burnett and James' mommies.
