I agree that Jimmy handled each situation differently, but Jimmy didn't give ANYONE a free pass.

They left Michael Irvin at the airport when he was late to their flight to Detroit in 1992.

He left Aikman when he was late for their team bus after the NFC Championship victory over the 49ers in 1992.

After their loss in Washington, late 1992, he was in the face of Michael Irvin, and Kenny Norton on the plane.

Emmitt Smith said that Jimmy got on him just like all the others.

So, I agree that Jimmy wasn't going to do something to hurt his football team (cutting Leon Lett), but he didn't deal softly with anyone as far as I can tell, and as far as the players recount it.

Pulease.

Jimmy Johnson left Irvin KNOWING Irvin would catch a later flight to the game. I bet if that was the only plane to get to Detroit by game time, Johnson would have delayed the plane then would have held Irvin out for a series.

Johnson isn't stupid. He knows that great players win games. He made an example of Curvin Richards because he didn't need Curvin Richards.

I'm sure Emmitt wasn't worried about being cut if he fumbled.

As for Wade's approach, I like it because it's a business approach. It's basically telling the players if you are committed to not doing it again, then put it on paper.

You have it on record - beyond words - you have something you can use in the future.

Besides, Jimmy Johnson and Wade Phillips aren't the same coaches anymore than Bill Belichick and Tony Dungy are the same. Each has his different style.

I'll never forget when we came out unprepared against the 49ers in the 1994 Championship game. Interception, fumble, fumble, and we are down 21-0. I can remember, distinctly, thinking, "No way this happens if Jimmy is still here."

And you know what, that would normally have been speculation, but in Jimmy's case it wasn't. There is no way in the world that Jimmy Johnson would not have THAT TEAM prepared to play SF on the road for a 3 peat.

I always felt a bit sorry for Switzer, kind of inherited a no win situation, but there is no doubt that the team's discipline took a severe hit under him.

Now, I agree with you here. Jimmy Johnson was a disciplinarian.

But because Emmitt, Troy and Michael were disciplinarians (as far as their approach to the game) too, it fit Johnson's personality.

His "discipline" of those three were mild compared to his discipline of others. I think they share the stories more to illustrate his personality than out of some sort of fear they had. They knew Johnson wouldn't discipline them the same way he did a Curvin Richards or the Asthma Field camp scrub.

I don't think you have said anything that we ALL didn't already know.

*Would he cut Aikman or Emmitt or Irvin? No.
*Was Aikman not going to play in the Super Bowl if he missed the team bus? No

But if you think that Jimmy Johnson wasn't a disciplinarian or that any of those guys INCLUDING Aikman, Smith and Irvin just blew him off as not having to truly account to him, then you are just wrong.

I think you are right to an extent. To combine your two thoughts: I think he was "mild" with them, not only because they were great players, but also because they disciplined themselves and others when it came to football. In that way, they all worked together.
