The Romo Empire

June 19, 2007 2:11 AM

From everyone I've talked to lately, it's become apparent the Cowboys want to sign quarterback Tony Romo to a long-term contract extension before the season begins.

According to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli, agent Tom Condon and Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones resumed negotiations last week after taking a two-month break.

When I talked to Romo last week, he said he didn't have a number in mind yet, but I imagine he could come up with a ballpark figure in a pinch. The six-year, $48 million contract that Matt Schaub signed in Houston might be a good jumping off point, but Romo has had more game experience and led a team to the playoffs.

For everyone who keeps writing that the Cowboys should hedge their bets with Romo, you lost that opportunity on draft day when owner Jerry Jones decided not to take Brady Quinn at No. 22.

As Bill Parcells would say, the club doesn't have any recourse if Romo's not the guy. And for all this talk about Romo's summer of love, his best friend on the team, Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten, told me Monday night that Romo has probably spent more time at the club's practice facility than any player on the team.

I expect the Cowboys to reward Romo with a split signing bonus over two years that totals more than $20 million. At this point, the only leverage Jones has is that Romo only has 10 starts.

In the end, that won't be enough.

Quick warning to everyone viewing this thread.

No matter how many times you read that (up there), you won't make any sense of it.

Enjoy Chris Cooley.

For the folks that think Romo won't be signed until after the start of the season...

Pshaw!

It never bothered me that they might extend his contract before the end of the season. Teams give brand new rookies $60 million based on potential alone. At least Romo has some games under his belt even if it's not alot.

BTW, that Cooley pic wasn't there when I posted... ***?

If there's ever been a good "Caption this" photo, this is it.

Seriously... What's his malfunction? I guess ES loves him and Portis, though, even as they "free spirit" their way to 5-11...

Cna we finally wipe Houston off the map for this? That was a bonehead deal they gave to Schaub who hasn't even flashed a pna of fools' gold in hte NFL. But this bonehead move has now set the market price for overpaying on inexperienced QBs in the NFL. Way to go Houston, you armpit-of-a-franchise!

We lost the ability to hedge our bets with Romo when Jerry passed on Quinn?

I guess I'm dense  , because yeah, we pretty much did.

Not that we *should* have hedged our bets, but where else would we get a QB with the potential to be as good as Romo and thus give us another option instead of him?

(And for the record, I think Quinn will be very average. But I see what Mosley is saying.)

What he's saying (unintentionally, no doubt) is that we lost the ability to hedge our bets with Romo....

by hedging our bets with Romo. (passing on Quinn)

And when you divide by zero, it's a long day. A looooooooooong day.

Culpepper is about to be cut free. Culpepper up until the blown knee season was a pretty good QB. He also had a season that far surpassed anything Romo has ever done (which coincided with Randy Moss' worse year - so don't give me that crap either).

I am not saying I want Culpepper over Romo either (so don't give me that crap either).

I am JUST saying, that Culpepper is AN option.

That is all.

Don't read into it anymore than that.

Just one possible, less than likely, distant, option THAT COULD possibly be a hedge bet....

Quinn wouldn't help us this year if Romo falters. And if that happens, we'll have a shot (or two) at a better quarterback than Quinn in next year's draft.

We have two 1st round picks to use as QB bait if Romo fails.

Dallas has no reason to commit before the season starts unless they are fairly certain his play will only raise his price.

The two or three part bonus that Schaub go seems to be in play here.

That is bet-hedging at its finest.

Pay Romo 30 mil SB, but realy only pay 8 mil up front, 10 mil as roster bonus next june, 10 mil in june of the following year and 2 in roster bonus for year4.

If he doesn't perform you cut him prior to June 1 and draft a rookie at the top of the draft.

I am praying we pay him alot and he earns every cent.

I don't know... From my viewpoint it would make more sense to wait until the '07 season is over...
