Can Jaylon Smith and Sean Lee eventually become the best linebacker tandem in the NFL?

Matt Mosley: Can we maybe see Smith play a preseason game first? I think everyone's getting ahead of themselves over Smith, including Jerry. I haven't heard anyone with a medical background say that nerve in his knee is firing. That's still a huge part of it. The Cowboys have the best rehab guy in the business in Britt Brown. If I hear Britt say at some point the guy's ready, then folks should get excited. As far as I know, Britt hasn't said that to anyone.

Jaylon Smith is going to be good. May take him a year or half a year to get back to being the man. The problem is with Lee. Hes getting old already and another injury lurks just around the corner. I hope we can get 5 years of tandem out of em. But what ever we get with both of em on the field, we will be better for it and will enjoy it to the max. Just dont get your hopes up that they will be the Saviour. We will still need more pieces soon.

I have no idea how his knee is, but no one is allowed to give any detailed info on Smith's knee, other than Smith, and he indicated good news from his DR. If Mosely is waiting for a Dr to have a presser on the status of Smith's knee, he's in for a long wait.

If anyone on this forum was versed in twitter speak and jive, they would be able to translate and let us know if the nerve is firing.

I am. I'm also an armchair psychologist. I think Mosley is right to a certain extent - if you listen to Jaylon himself and read between the lines, he has said a lot. He talks about getting his "straight line" 4.4 speed back and says he believes he could have played at an elite level in the playoffs, but while playing with the brace.

I think he's trying to mentally prepare for the possibility of trying to play with the brace if need be, but obviously hopes that won't be the case. To me, I still say 50-50.

I don't pretend to have any idea whether or not Jaylon Smith will return to the ranks of the "elite" when all is said and done. He was exactly that in college but knee and leg injuries have threatened to hamper and possibly even end his lofty athletic status. I think he'll have an opportunity at returning to football in 2017 but I believe that return will be one that will be a very gradual process during the season.

Assuming it happens, I'm expecting his return to prominence should be one that might go anywhere from mid to late season in 2017 before it takes off impressively. If anything has become painfully obvious, it's that it won't happen overnight. I'm also hoping the Cowboys should and likely will draft another promising linebacker within the next draft, provided that the available talent favors it. I'm sure it'll be their main objective. I think it'll be their main objective.

Of course, DE is the one position that stands out as a highly desperate need entering the 2017 season. I'm extemely hopeful for a veteran FA acquisition that provides the addition of a capable DE on the right side to lessen our level of desperation. Of course, as has been advertised by the FO, the draft promises to be the main supplier of the Cowboys' talent pool going forward. Anyhow, here's hoping the scouting department manages to make some astute decisions as they attempt to resolve our defense's anemic pass rush. It will be their priority, according to the FO.

Unfortunately, the only one that could help us passed away 6 years ago.

Agreed. Curious to know if Smith makes it back and, if so, reaches the same level of play,or close to it, that he had in College. There is no guarantee that he will be a great NFL player everything considered. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I agree. We desperately need catalytic players on defense. When you watch Ryan Shazier, that's exactly what he is. I hope and pray that Jaylon can return to form and play the game much like Shazier plays.

Why should a doctor need to come out and say the nerve is firing....they don't need to, and it would be bad of them to do so. That would be against doctor patient confidential privilege.
Why should Britt Brown do the same thing....it is not his place to come out and say anything...when was the last time we heard a trainer come out and give a statement...to my knowledge....never....

I do not see any reason why Smith would indicate he is getting ready, only to come TC time and then they put him on PUP again. However, that would not surprise me. Because that is the way this team works at times.

My expectations are still tempered, but also excited he will be ready. Though until he is out there, we can do nothing but wait and see.

So because Mosley hasn't heard it, it can't be true.

Maybe he should try to lip read Britt's mouth.

What I want to know is if Mosley actually showed up at practice and seen Smith doing his drills.
If not, then he is simply guess like us.

The only member of the press who indicated that he has seen Smith do drills is Archer.
Archer said Smith looked like he looked great and would not have been able to tell he was wearing the brace if he did not see the 'tape'.
This included pass rushing drills as well as agility drills.
There has been numerous comments about Jaylon running a 4.4 or 4.5 - which is obviously about where he was before in terms of straight line speed.

Reading between the lines, I dont know if Smith will fully recover to the point of playing without the brace.
I hope so, but it has been more than 1 year.
There has been no extra surgery so there does not appear to be any clear problem.
By July, Jaylon will probably be as good as he will be (or within 95%).
All the info about Jaylon being as good with the brace is interesting.
Perhaps we are being prepped for the scenario that Jaylon has to play with the brace.
If he indeed is moving as well with the brace, I guess it would not matter except for Jaylon's personal good.
