Mosley: The Cowboys are bluffing when it comes to their thoughts on drafting a QB at No. 4

The only thing standing in the way of Jerry Jones possibly taking a quarterback with the fourth overall pick in this April's draft is Tony Romo. And Jones made it clear at the NFL combine that he believed Romo had plenty of tread left on his delicate clavicle.
I believe now more than ever that Jones was full of it when he made those comments. The Cowboys haven't brought in a legitimate backup to Romo for one simple reason: They are thinking seriously about selecting either Carson Wentz or Jared Goff.

I believe this based on the indifference they've shown to the backup spot in free agency and the whispers coming from Valley Ranch. A report surfaced this weekend that former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott will be in town to meet with the Cowboys on Sunday. The organization loves the fact that Prescott captained his team four of the five years he was on campus. The fact that he was arrested on DUI charges recently may cause him to fall in the draft, but this is the land of second (and third) chances. Former Eagles personnel man and current ESPN analyst Louis Riddick told 103.3 FM ESPN's "Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw & Mosley" there's almost no way you can watch film of Prescott in college and project him as a starter in the NFL. The Cowboys love his intangibles and I've had one AFC scout tell me that Prescott's quick release reminds him of Aaron Rodgers'. There's a chance now the Cowboys could have Prescott in the third or fourth rounds of the draft.

A quick release is useless if the pass doesn't go where it is supposed to. But, for a 4th? Not sure. We may need that pick for another special teams back-up linebacker.

Don't waste time and money on Prescott. If you are going to take a QB take Goff or Wentz.

I agree. Either take one of the top 2 prospects or wait til the 4th/5th round to find a backup / developmental QB. With all the other talent in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, no way do I use one of those picks on a 2nd or 3rd tier QB.

Isnt that what Prescott is? A 4th rounder?

I like Prescott with one of our aquired 6th round picks if he last that long...even if we take one of the 2 top guys with our 4th pick.

Supposedly. He may develop into a quality backup but I don't think he is ready now.

My question is, why would the Cowboys take him in the 4th round if his ceiling is backup QB at best? Why would they not just go ahead and take the high-probability prospect at #4?

Well is that what they feel though? I don't think you invest a 4th rounder in a QB who's peak is a backup quarterback. You can get that in even later rounds.

He should be. But I've seen several mocks with him in the late 2nd and 3rd.

Yeah I think that's a bit early but at the same time if you believe you have a potential franchise qb......I don't think it matters where you take him. Like for instance, if the Seahawks would've drafted Russel in the 2nd round instead of the 4th....would they have lost sleep over it?

Prescott's potential? Depends on who you ask.

The most important aspect of team structuring is talent evaluation.

Let's hope McClay still has some magic.

Opinions about Prescott are everywhere.

I personally think he could develop into an NFL starter. How good? I don't know. But he definitely has huge bust potential, too.

True. But this year many are questioning whether the top 2 QBs in the first are potential franchise QB's. So not sure what would make one think Dak is one. I'm sure he has potential but at the same time I think there are going to be better prospects in the high 3rd than Dak.

That DUI may cause him to go undrafted. I'm guessing maybe a team will take him in the 7th round if he does get drafted.

Players who do stupid things right before the draft are a huge concern. QBs who do stupid things right before the draft are an enormous red flag. How can you trust a QB with such poor judgment?

Cool lets throw dog poop in the 4th and see if it sticks, because you know that's how Franchise QB's are found.Yes I know there are exceptions to the rule. We invested in a project QB a few years back, and now we want another one?

My only problem with taking one at four is that this place will be unreadable with the million threads decrying he needs to take over for Tony every time he throws a pic..ugh

If he makes it to the 6th round due to his DUI, we should use one of those extra picks on him.

No. All of those are already pegged for TEs.
