Mosley: The logic behind the Cowboys trading down in the draft

By Matt Mosley , Special Contributor Contact Matt Mosley on Twitter: @mattmosley

Special contributor Matt Mosley held a chat recently. Here are some Cowboys highlights.

I know you need two to tango, but wouldn't it be better for Cowboys to trade down into top 12 and get an additional second, and then trade up their two fourth rounders for an additional third? That would give them five picks in the top 85, and could get them quality players at DE, CB, RB, QB and maybe WR. That could be a franchise-altering draft. Thoughts? Am I delusional?

Mosley: "Compared to Jerry, you are extremely lucid. I like where you're going. As I've tried to warn folks, get ready for the TRADE DOWN talk. It's coming. The Cowboys would love to get another second-round pick. They believe they could land a nice defensive player in the 8-10 range. It's not as hard financially to come roaring up the board anymore. But there are some old-school owners who aren't pleased with how Jerry brokered the LA stadium deal. Keep your eye on that situation."

I think the thing about this draft is who wants to trade up. Who wants to trade up into the top 5? I don't see any takers. Not for a decent price anyway.

The Rams. I don't think they want to make their season debut with Case Keenum at the helm. If Wentz goes to Browns and they like Goff(California connection),they need to get ahead of San Fran to get him. They own 2 second round picks (#43,#45). Don't know what it looks like on the trade calculator, but I'm asking for both(plus#15 of course). And we can always remind them Jerry was the one that got things moving on this relocation thing if necessary. 4 picks in the top 45. That's how you build a championship team that can sustain itself.

There is no logic in trading down, so lets just close the door on that now!

If they do that trade I'd draft Lynch at 15 and then use all 3 second rounders on defense. Supposedly Lynch's workout with Dallas went extremely well.

15 is further than I'd like to go. Would prefer to remain in the top 10. Would love to get Lynch at that spot though

That's the issue. This is a odd draft, lots of good talent at a couple positions but no stand out super stars
That said if you trade down and still get the player you wanted the price you get is not as important since you still hot who you wanted

I can see teams doing it for a QB. Never underestimate how they get overvalued.

That's the great thing about having a surplus of picks. Say you want a guy at #9 to get in front of the Giants and offer Tampa #15 and #43 for #9. It gives you a chance to watch the draft unfold and adjust accordingly.

It scares me though. The idea that you can miss a good prospect and just keep trading and trading and trading.

But you have to be able to trust your scouting department. For example,if the Cowboys value Shaq Lawson more or equal to Bosa then you do it. Sure you can get burned, but the reward can be enormous. You don't do it if you have a specific player targeted at #4,but it feels like they don't.

The rule of thumb is you don't trade down more than the number of players that you have graded about equally.

Trading down just to do it to acquire picks is how you make serious mistakes because you then will run the risk of drafting quantity over quality.

Swear to god some of those old farts are never happy. Most of em are literally printing money because of Jerry.

Five picks in the top 85 would be an absolute dream scenario. That would present us the opportunity to add 2-3 immediate starters and a couple more players who should develop into starters. That would have the potential to develop into a team defining draft. This is the first trade down scenario I am in favor of.

If they do that, and San Fran is as hungry for a QB as everyone assumes, then Lynch will not be there at 15.

So we move back to 12, who do we take?

Lawson? Hargreaves? Rankings?
