Since this is "list" day:

1. Michael Vick. Hyped to the point it's making me sick. Why can't he ever pass for even 200 yards? Is it that hard?
2. Lavar Arrington. Blows more plays than any LB I can think of. Still living off 2001 and being #2 overall in the draft.
3. Warren Sapp. In previous years would have been at the very top. All talk and little action.
4. Charles Woodson. Never was a cover cornerback and should have been a free safety.
5. Jeremiah Trotter. Goes from cut to the pro bowl? Too many close-ups of him flexing his muscles after every damned tackle for my tastes. He should give half his salary to Brian Dawkins and Michael Lewis for literally covering his back.
6. Chad Pennington. Oh the wonders of being a QB in New York. He's a bus driver; the Bob Griese of our day.
7. Willie Roaf. Should personally sponsor ESPN Primetime. An average pass blocker, Primetime covered his one pancake block and relentlssly hyped him. So good the Saints said "See You Later".
8. Jeremy Shockey. Thinking he doesn't have to be a professional will sink him. The hype is ridiculous.
9. Zach Thomas. Was the cover boy hyping Jimmy Johnson's drafting genius. Never could face a physical OL, though.
10. Brian Urlacher. Not his fault that he's hyped, but he's not all that.
11. Chris Samuels. Very average. How was this guy worth two firsts, a 4th, and a 5th?
12. Aaron Brooks. He's reached coach-killer status.
13. Jake Plummer. How is such an inconsistent player getting paid so much and starting for such a high profile team? Shanahan was clearly desperate.
14. Peerless Price. Not a #1 WR, never will be, and his name is "Peerless"..
15. Larry Allen. Still living off the past a bit, but I see that changing this year. He's on this list because of expectations.
16. Grant Wistrom. I hear the hype, I see the signing bonus inflation, but where are the sacks?
17. Terence Newman. Talented, quick, but why lose so many battles when challenged one-on-one? Where's the confidence?
18. Terrell Suggs. I'm looking at the little packs of Kool-aid, just not opening them yet. I still see a one-dimensional sack artist who is lucky to be where he is.
19. Joey Harrington. Nowhere near the pedigree.
20. Roy Williams. Gotta cover better; being a great safety is his real Destiny.

BrainPaint and I might have an argument for you on Pennington (your long ball bias might be showing a bit there, ravi,) but that's an absolutely cogent and persuasive list.

That's one heckuva list ravidubey! Terrence Newman doesn't get hyped up by the media, and I am not saying you said he ever was hyped by the media, but also this will be T-New's 3rd year. I say give him his 3rd year before tabbing him overrated. I can see why you put L.A. on the list. He is getting long in the tooth, but this could be a huge season for him. Roy Williams needs to play better as well. But it wasn't his fault for having to make up for the lack of a depth in the secondary last year and having to play out of position, when we all know he is better when he can play closer to the line of scrimmage.

I would also have to say that Zach Thomas is a playmaker. Has been from day one. He is small, but he definitely plays up to potential when he is healthy. Urlacher had one very good season his rookie year, and has never quite lived up to that one season ever since. So yes, Urlacher is overhyped.

And I COMPLETELY AGREE with your assessment of Michael Vick... aka Ron Mexico. The media loves to bob on his knob and the kid has yet to prove he can be a QB that can read a defense.

Thought that would get a response from you, LTN! Coles will be a better fit for Pennington than Moss and will be able to carry some of those short passes farther.

Chad really has to put it together in the postseason where there always seems to be either an injury or a disasterous outing.

good stuff there, a few thoughts:

1. totally agree on Vick. He will get more exposed than ever this coming year as teams worry more about his feet than his arms.

2. agree, still living off the rep of that awesome diving tackle he made in college, but I could see Lavar bouncing back if he is determined as he has the talent.

6. kinda disagree here. Had a bad shoulder injury late in the year. Now that he has his favorite WR, LC back, this should be a make or break year for him and I think he will do well

10. totally agree. always is given the injury excuse but I have never been impressed watching him although I admit I have not seen a ton of Bears games.

12. agreed, would like nothing to do with him.

14. disagree that Peerless is overrated or overhyped as many knew he was not a #1 WR and he has taken a ton of heat down here in the dirty south. I blame the falcons front office for thinking he was a true #1 when most knew he wasnt.

19. considering that he was rumored to be released and has some competition and a short leash dont think he is overhyped/rated either. coming out of college, yes. now that is a few yrs down the road think that most football pundits dont think he has what it takes and if he cant do it this year its obvious he never will.

LOL

Yeah well, some of those disasterous outings come off the choking toes of stupid kickers....

I'd put Keyshawn ahead of any of those other Cowboys...

I'd also put Ray Lewis on there somewhere. Still a very good player, yes, but he's not the player he was a few years ago. Remember that semi-embarrassing miked-up ESPN Sunday Night game where he didn't do much at all?

Yes. That was embarassing.

Here's my list but in no particular order:

-Michael Vick
-Brian Urlacher
-Jeremy Shockey
-Byron Leftwich
-Eli Manning
-David Carr
-Charles Woodson
-All Denver RBs (recent past and present)
-Antonio Gates
-Koren Robinson
-Aaron Brooks
-Peerless Price
-Lavar Arrington
-Roy Williams (I agree about him playing out of position. While we Cowboy fans know he will become a great player and is a tackling machine when lined up properly... he hasn't really done much thus far to deserve the props that he's already given)

What's it going to be then, eh?

Where are these players getting recognition to be overrated?

They are all still quite young.

It is not like they are getting dribbled over like Michael Vick, Brett Favre and Brian Urlacher.

Here is my short list for what it matters:

1. Michael Vick - He would deserve the recognition if he were able to make an accurate throw. Being a QB is not just about having a strong arm. He is the same kind of athlete Elway was, but even Elway had to grow into the position. Right now, he is behind where Elway was at a similar stage in his career. People are just impressed with the athleticism, not that he is actually one of the best at his position.

2. Brian Urlacher - He has been compared to Butkus since his rookie year and for some reason it keeps sticking.

3. Brett Favre - Unlike these others, he has actually done it and at one time was worthy of the idolatry. Now, he is a but a shell of his former self and his weaknesses (read: dim witted interceptions at the worst time) were a bit cute when he was younger. Now he just looks ordinary.

4. Jeremy Shockey - Has lived off what he did in the Hall of Fame game in his first season. He is a walking hype machine and has been since day one and it has gotten worse since his "homo" comments.

5. Jake Plummer - Thanks to Bill Walsh, but not his play.

There is one without fail, tried and true, completely sure sign a player is overrated: If the idiot announcers on ESPNs Sunday Night telecasts drool all over them.

Watch any of the above players, listen to Dan Patrick, Paul McGuire and above all Joe Theismann, slurp slurping over them and you can rest assured that player might be overrated.

Hmmmm.
Interesting topic and harder to answer then the top 20 Cowboys deal I took a shot at.

Lemme just take a top 10 and beseech a little leeway even in that.

1. Jeremy Shockey. Big Time TE really is a just a large WR.
2. Joey Harrington. Makes mental mistakes, is frail, has mediocre and inconsistent arm.
3. Corey Simon. I dont think the guy is even the 2nd best DT on the Eagles.
4. Randy Moss. He's a talent but he doesn't show up every week mentally.
5. Edgerrin James. James is a good back, but he thinks he's the best in the game and frequently gets mentionned as such.
6. The Redskisn team. Honestly that collection of talent is as a whole underachieving on the order of 3 or 4 years in a row. (a cheap shot yes but it felt good)
7. Jevon Kearse. An outstanding player his first 2 years, he has seriously faded.
8. Charles Woodson, Champ Bailey, Warren Sapp. All plainly has beens. Bailey could rebound of course but he was dreadful last year not just mediocre.
9. Brett Favre. The golden Brett hasn't just not carried the Pack in the playoffs; he has been single-handedly removing them w/ 5 pick games the last 2 years. His time has come.
10. Antonio Gates. A very good young player but when the entire 1st and 2nd line on defense is keyed on LT its a little easier to play pass catcher in the intermediate portions of the field.

wow, cant say I agree at all including Allen, Williams or Newman on the list...how can a guy thats a sure fire first ballot HOF be overhyped? how can a guy rated by league personnel people as the best at his position be overhyoed and overrated (RW)?...how can a guy who played hurt all last yr on a defense with no pass rush, 2nd CB or 2n S to speak of be overhyped?

Vick has gotta be on any of these lists...mediocre to terrible passer at best
