Most Overrated QBs (Aikman #4 )

There are not many QB's who have played the game that I would want over Troy Aikman when it came to the big game. Troy consistently raised the level of his play in the big game.

He was also a QB who was more interested in winning than personal stats so if that meant handing the ball off to Emmitt 25 or 30 times in a game and he only had 200 yards passing so be it but when Dallas had to go to the air Troy could do it with the best of them

Bash away...

But I was never enamored with Aikman... though he was very accurate...

let me put it this way most of you can remember Danny White so I will just go back that far...Danny would have a WR go down and they would throw in a guy no one heard of like Gay, Renfro etc... and Danny would still complete passes to them...Troy would say well he didn't run the correct route so i can't trust that the guy is gonna be there...

Troy it seemed to me had to have everything perfect around him and he didn't seem to be able to elevate a team. Berelein <sic> seemed to me to be just as good or better in 1991. He also seemed to have a competiveness that aikman seemed to lack.

I guess all of us see things differently and that is okay but if I am starting my own team and could pick and choose any QB in their prime I think (without making a list) that Aikman would not even be in my top 50 QB's of all time.

Don't even get me started on how just God awful Aikman is in the booth. :laugh2:

reading this again, some will think I have something against Aikman...like he kicked my dog or something...:laugh1: but no I do not I just really try to call them as I see them.

Don't get me wrong I liked/like Aikman, but he use to make me so mad sometimes! First of all he was as accurate as they come, but he never could throw the deep ball (we all know this). He also always wore me out acting like he got hit by a train when he would fall down, sacked, etc. It always looked like he was a 50yr old man sometimes. What really sucked about him most was he never smiled, or looked like he was having fun. Now that we see the way he is on Fox it's kind of dissapointing that his personality never showed while playing football. It might be a business, but it is still just a game!

Aikman was overrated because of his supporting cast.

Michael was overrated because our run game was so good.

Emmitt was overrated because the offensive line opened up lanes 20 feet wide.

Apparently the only people who were worth a damn on those super bowl teams were Kevin Gogan and Mark Tuinei. How did we ever win?

Before I even opened this thread, I knew it would be from "Cold Hard Football Facts," easily the worst excuse for a stat-related football Web site.

I can't believe someone actually wrote that crap. I could make a much better list of overrated QB's starting with Steve Young. How in the world did he not make the list? You could stick Donovan McNabb on the list as well. I put a lot of stock in how quarterbacks play in big games.

I do not doubt your sincerity at all, but I highly question your vision.

I agree with that.

He wasn't an improvisor like Staubach or Elway, or even Romo. He is a perfectionist off the field and he liked things just as orderly on the field. Making something out of nothing wasn't his strength.

But there are free-lancing quarterbacks who couldn't do the things Troy could do either. I think Tom Landry would have loved Troy's high standards, his demeanor, his accuracy and his ability to execute.

I just think he was a great talent who played big in the biggest games.

:lmao: well my friend, I went to the same eye doctors as the NFL Refs that do the Cowboy games.

Another idiot who thinks that Troy was merely "along for the ride." Steve Walsh handing off to Emmitt would not have netted us three championships.

I will not argue with any of that...nor am I saying that Troy was garbage (I know you did not say that) but what I am saying is that I do agree that some folks really do over rate Aikman.

alright this list is cool but only if eli manning is declared #1 for all time no matter what new qbs come into the league.really isnt an argument against that.

I appreciate the sense of humor!

What cracks me up is the fact he puts Aikman on this list, but leaves off someone like Terry Bradshaw. While Bradshaw did win his share of titles, his supporting cast was actually better and he still put up horrid numbers.

Bradshaw had 5 seasons where he put up sub-50% completion and had as many INTs as TDs. Heck, he had a QB rating of barely above 70% while he played with folks like Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Mike Webster, Rocky Bleier, etc.,

That isn't even counting how he had a defense with the likes of Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, Mel Bount, Joe Greene, among others who could make the game as low scoring as needed.

Any list that starts with the most overrated QB's of all time has to start with Bradshaw and Namath.

well this guy is comparing stats to Brady and Peyton. back than teams didn't throw the ball 50+ times a game. not to mention all the rule changes that make it easier to pass in todays NFL.
I agree. Aikman was not in a passing system. We ran the ball all game long. We played NFC East smash mouth football. I feel thats how you should play the game. He did not need to produce record breaking numbers to win. He just needed to keep the D honest. Not to mention the clutch factor that came with him. The guy stepped up in big games and made it happen.

With all that 'so-called' new analysis, this guy couldn't factor in things like Elway and Aikman working in run first systems that didn't throw the ball like they do nowadays.

Elway was held back by Reeves, and only allowed to let loose on those patented two minute drills. Where he blew through opponents who knew exactly what he was going to be doing.

Aikman was there with Emmett Smith. They set up the pass with superior running and often didn't need to go blazing to win. Aikman often has the rep of being the most accurate passer ever, but he's over-rated???

What a dumb blow-hard.

The nerve of this guy thinking he knows better than the sports writers who watched all of his games and inducted him on the first ballot.

i'd put steve young in that list too.

anyways...

i agree even with troy at 4.
