Maybe if that textbook was called "keeping it real in the ring". The way he hung his hand, danced around, and left himself open while tauting the other fighter is pretty much exactly what you DO NOT want to do in a fight.
That would work for no one else because no one else is gifted enough to pull it off. The man was a hell of fighter, fun to watch and put on a show but I dare anyone to try and emulate that and have the same success.
Maybe I should've worded my opinion differently, because I agree with you on this. Only Jones could pull off the way he kept his right down by his waist (ala Tommy Hearns), and his rooster-like style of pecking in and out an leaving himself open.
So I'll refine my opinion and keep it about "skills". You gotta' have the skills Jones had to get away with the way he fought. Most fighters would've had a very short career trying to carbon-copy him in the ring. But, Jone's skills, IMO, were unmatched with regard to the total package.
Some guys had great defense, like Ken Norton or Dwight (Muhammed Kawii) Braxton. Some guys were extremely quick, like Pernell Whitaker and De LaHoya. Some guys had great power, like Hagler, Hearns, Rocky or Tyson. Others had the footwork and ring generalship like Ali or Camacho. But NO ONE had it ALL like Roy Jones Jr. Take the best of any fighters out there, put those skills in one package, and that was Roy Jones at his best.
Just my opinion...............................
