Off-topic but a future thread may deal with actors "robbed" of an Oscar win or nomination. Here were the nominees and winner in the Best Actress category during the 2004 ceremonies:

*WINNER* Charlize Theron, Monster
Keisha Castle-Hughes, Whale Rider
Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give
Samantha Morton, In America
Naomi Watts, 21 Grams

I will go to my grave believing Uma Thurman should have gotten a nomination for Kill Bill: Volume 1. All respect to Watts but Theron had the best performance. Even so, Thurman's name should have been in the running.

Thurman did win a Saturn Award for Best Actress but those are specific to certain genres. Her Golden Globes and BAFTA Best Actress nominations carry more critical acclaim weight for me personally.

Val Kilmer in Tombstone?

A great example. And further evidence of why the Oscars are a joke. Detached, out of touch trash awards, that carry no weight or significance anymore. Through their own elitism and snobbery, they’ve undermined their own importance.

Nobody cares anymore, and the damage is all self inflicted.

Did win: "Annie Hall”

Should have won: "Star Wars”
I am a Star Wars devotee but the directing and acting in that was not good. I am very forgiving of anything SW but I make allowances for the acting and often, the writing.

No argument about that, but that film also changed movies forever and make an incredible impact on the industry. But it’s one that the boorish snobs at the academy turn their noses up at to this day.

But isn't this true about all of those awards shows? I do not know anyone under the age of 70 that gives a damn about any of them and the worst is the R&R HOF.

It's akin to the effect of critics now, who cares about their opinion? I have never understood what qualifies them, having accomplished nothing close to the people they critique and actually never done it at all.

To a large extent, yes. But I’ve long felt that the Oscars was the most blatantly out of touch of them all. To me, they clearly go to great lengths to exclude films and actors that have mass appeal.

I never listen to any ONE film critic, but I do pay attention to a consensus of reviews if I’m personally on the fence about seeing a movie in theaters.

yeh that's the Academy Award show itself .. they have a boring appeal and format, and it's extremely sleepy. they tried to make it up with comedians to rev up the atmosphere with humor and laughter
but even that cannot save it .

and while MTV and Grammy's can input live music events and sparkling celebrities into it, the Oscar doesn't seem built for live it up music and dance routines, thus it's a ho-hum effort at jokes and speeches
and that's an ultimate turn off with viewing audiences ...... " they'll read about it the day after "

and with today's streaming TV action, and more to watch elsewhere - the Oscar award show is gonna take a further dive down ...

i've always believed in believing my own eyes, and judging films for myself ...and letting myself be the lead into seeing movies .. even if its' a gamble.
see what the synopsis and characters is about ...and leave the rest to me.

i never depend upon and let the critics lead me into seeing or not seeing a movie that synopsis or trailers strike my interest. It's been too many guilty pleasure movies out there that i'm afraid i'd miss out on
because o listened to a critic. ..and heck thee have been movies that critics raised hell rain to the skies to must see,. .that i've been very disappointed and found vastly overrated. (ala Captain Phillips, American Hustle, Wonder Woman 84, Ex Machina, Dune, A Most Violent Year, etc)

- I saw the Sting but as much as i liked it, i thought the Exorcist was just too one of a kind classic over Sting.

- The Revenant (DiCaprio) should have won Oscar Best Picture over Spot light.

- Surprised Ten Commandments did not win over Around the World in 80 days

- English Patient ? (yawn) .. Fargo or Jerry McGuire shouldve won it.

- How did Birdman win over American Sniper ?

- It's a Wonderful Life did not win the Oscar ? wow

and let's not forget Out of Africa ...over Color Purple ..that's the one even legendary film critics Siskel & Ebert went after the Oscar voting panel about back then ...
