Movies that deserved Oscar. and movie snubs that should've won

- I saw the Sting but as much as i liked it, i thought the Exorcist was just too one of a kind classic over Sting.

- The Revenant (DiCaprio) should have won Oscar Best Picture over Spot light.

- Surprised Ten Commandments did not win over Around the World in 80 days

- English Patient ? (yawn) .. Fargo or Jerry McGuire shouldve won it.

- How did Birdman win over American Sniper ?

- It's a Wonderful Life did not win the Oscar ? wow

It's a Wonderful Life was controversial as it came out at the same time as Best Years of Our Lives did, which won the Oscar.

The subject matter of It's a Wonderful Life, with the central character 4F and so close to the end of the war, 1946, it took a while for it to gather steam to be the must watch Holiday movie it is now.

George Bailey was anything but a draft dodger, and his brother Harry was a war hero, but that still hampered the success of the film and the picture that won was about men that had gone to war.

What were the movie films you saw that deserved to win Academy Awards ... and what were the sure fire movies that you thought definitely should have won the Oscar Awards ... but Did Not Win ?

Great topic and article. I agree with all of the article's examples except these two:

1990: Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy's interactive performances were so-well done that I was surprised how much I enjoyed Driving Miss Daisy. That said, I do consider Field of Dreams as a classic.

1995: loved Pulp Fiction (Tarantino fan) but Forrest Gump was an epic matched 110% (in my opinion) by Tom Hanks' performance. For me, even more than his work in Philadelphia and Apollo 13.

I remain amazed Black Swan lost to The King's Speech, even after all these years.

Off-topic but a future thread may deal with actors "robbed" of an Oscar win or nomination. Here were the nominees and winner in the Best Actress category during the 2004 ceremonies:

*WINNER* Charlize Theron, Monster
Keisha Castle-Hughes, Whale Rider
Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give
Samantha Morton, In America
Naomi Watts, 21 Grams

I will go to my grave believing Uma Thurman should have gotten a nomination for Kill Bill: Volume 1. All respect to Watts but Theron had the best performance. Even so, Thurman's name should have been in the running.

Thurman did win a Saturn Award for Best Actress but those are specific to certain genres. Her Golden Globes and BAFTA Best Actress nominations carry more critical acclaim weight for me personally.

100% agree with you on Forrest Gump.

While Pulp Fiction is easily my favorite Tarantino, as it possesses
extraordinary elements, chapter moves and characters of legendary proportions,.

But Forrest Gump, .in how it jumps from time line history, music sound tracks and songs of some of these time lines,
Tom Hanks' well formatted narration, the historical giant iconic character figures of those events and time line (Bear Bryant, Nixon, john lenon, Kennedy, Elvis, etc) variety of cultures, American wars, protest movements, rags to riches cinderella pathway etc. - visual effects i had never seen display before (such as Lt Dan's amputated leg) locational choreography.... and the fantastic acting screen play and directing easily gives Forrest Gump the golden trophy, imo.

Pulp Fiction just came at the wrong year, otherwise it's a sure fire winner any other year in that time era.

from dusk till dawn was his best

good song, scene is worthy of an oscar

Only i just did not get the climatic final ending scene from Black Swan with (spolier alert)
with Natalie Portman literally transforming into a black swan,

How and why did it go from drama .. to CGI Sy-Fy ?
something resembling Lucy film (Scarlett Johansson) at it's climatic ending.

At the time of its' release, Black Swan had 'legs' ,such as in word of mouth spreading around as it was the film to see. ..

Wasn't that more director Robert Rodriquez's film, with QT's screen play ?

It might be, To be honest I don't know the the actual roles of movie job titles or what you mentioned well. I remember they did that duel movie with the car and woman with the shot gun leg together. No clue on from dusk till dawn, but it was a cool scene. The body guitar was great

I don't watch the oscars, but seeing george cloonies picture on the previous post made me think of O brother Where art thou. Not sure if it was up for any, but I bet it is was better than most of the movies that got an award that year.

Goodfellas lost to Dances with Wolves for best picture
Raging Bull lost to Ordinary People.
Two top top movies that did not take home the ultimate Hollywood prize.

Paul McCartney should have won for his song "Live and Let Die" from the movie, "Live and Let Die". It lost to "The Way We Were", from the move of the same name. I thought McCartney's song and lyrics were a perfect fit for the movie.

Shawshank Redemption
I mean, come on. How one of the better movies all time didn't even win best picture that year was crazy.

And yeah….Citizen Kane too

How freaking Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan is still mind boggling

Saving Private Ryan lost Best Picture to Shakespeare in Love....I haven't watched an awards show since after this travesty.

Mila Kunis should have gotten a Best Supporting Actress nom as well

Another two that got robbed IMO are both Ryan Gosling and Ana De Armas for Blade Runner

Ana De Armas might already be a lock for a best actress nomination in 2023 for the Marilyn Monroe film. Alot of hype already

Not surprising really. Oscars usually skew to drama's over action, and big office films in general. There are a decent amount of examples in which an inferior dramatic film beat out a superior action film. Its gotten better since Return of the King though
